    Second Fan on Laptop

    Hi,
My laptop has a reputation for thermal shutdowns because of bad heat flow design. My CPU temps reach 85-90 C and GPU temps ~ 85 C. I've tried quite a few things : Cleaning the fan, reapplying thermal paste [not Arctic Silver though], software hacks etc. I want to install a second fan in place of my DVD drive. It's just lying there anyway! Will this help? How would I go about this? Any compatible fans of the size? I've opened my laptop a few times but I didn't really look at whether the DVD drive is continuous with the open space inside. My laptop is a K55VM-SX086D

An easier solution is to use a stand under the laptop that has fans as a part of it. Cooler Master offers one that connects the fans via USB. The riser angle is also very good with a lot of space to put your wall wart and cabling as well. There are other units available of course. MY HP 17" DV9700 runs at ~40 all day without complaints.

    Hi and welcome to Sevenforums,
I'm not a build expert but what I've read I would guess the best investment might be to replace the hdd with a sdd,
sdd's run cooler might save you later frustrations ?
    Cheers.

Personally, I would only be doing this on an old laptop I didn't mind ruining.

The above suggestions are a better approach.

That being said, I ran across a couple things.

These may interest you, not your exact model but could give you some ideas,
