    Unknown and Not Initiated Drive


    Hello Admin/Jumanji/Fellow readers,

    I need help regarding my HDD problem. I have WD Element 1TB external HDD. While working on my system (HDD connected with laptop) accidentally my HDD slipped from table, stuck on chair and HDD get disconnected from laptop ( USB cable get detached from HDD end though another end still connected from Laptop) and fall from let say 2-3 feet on floor.

    Now when I connect it from my laptop, Disk Management display it as Unknown and Not Initiated Drive. USB symbol with Green check appears in System Tray. But in 'My Computer' no drive appears.

    When I connect this with my computer, HDD makes a Click/Tick sound multiple times in small interval and after few (40-50 sec) vibration/spinning of HDD also stops. If i eject my HDD using safe remove option from System Tray icon. It starts vibration/spinning again.

    I also try Mini Partition Tool version 8.1.1 to initiate my disk again with Parttion wizard. But PW does not list my Disk in available Disk list on system.

    TestDisk also not able to find my external HDD. I also try 'Partition Find and mount' software which display my drive with 0KB size but it does not list any sector or readable area in it.

    Please help I have such precious data in it.

    This is a hardware issue mate. Probably R/W head crashed to the platters. This is very typical with dropped disks. If the data is important and you need it back, you should approach a professional data recovery center. Every single data recovery attempt you do will cause the head to scratch on platters and may make the recovery difficult if not impossible even for a professional data recovery firm.

    Thanks Anshad fir quick response, I;ll visit to data recovery center soon. But i want to give it a try by myself and thought it was some crash issue which can be recovered by tools like PW.

    Thanks again. Also please do post if u get any second thought about to recover the data.

    you should approach a professional data recovery center.
    Just understand that these are VERY expensive! I had a Seagate 2TB drive crash on me last week and the quote from my local data recovery center was over $1000 USD to recover the data -- and that was a bargain! Recently, a friend had a Barracude drive crash on him and the quote he got was $2500 USD.

    These places disassemble, repair, and reassemble the drives, you you're paying for the labor, the parts, and "clean-room" time.

    Every single time you plug the disk to a USB port, the head will try to read "System Area" (SA) on negative platters. Since the head is damaged ( 99.99% ), it won't be able to initialize itself. Hence it will desperately attempt to read SA again and again which will resulted in the "clcik - click" sound. If the head is crashed to the platter, this will also cause damage to the platter and the data may gone forever.

    Yes, data recovery is expensive but in India it won't cost that much. Usual price is around 100$. We usually outsource data recovery work and never payed more than 150$.

    1000$ is equal to 60000 INR. For that price, people in here will be ready to forget their precious data forever.

    Thanks for valuable information. Now i wont make any further attempt to plug my HDD any more.
    Also may you please let me know how if you know any good Lab in Delhi area.

    Usually they will inspect the drive and gave you a quote. If it is too high, you can always try another lab but they are the best in my knowledge.
