    how to Unrecognize/reset a device?

Hi, its me again working on i7 920 with Windows 7 Home premium 64 Bit. Im having trouble recognizing a Hauppauge 2250 tv card, was working fine before, but i had to do a fresh install of Windows due to a attack on my system. now it says that it doesnt recognize the device yet the software is installed i guess my next step is to contact the manufacturer

What software are you using? Did you install the drivers? These are two different packages. The drivers need to be installed first then whatever software you plan to use. What is shown in your Device Manager for the card?

When you first started Windows after a reinstall, was the "new hardware" found then?

Here's a link to Hauppauge Support page: WinTV-HVR-2250 Support page

Yeah, I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this as it is described.

"I [did] a fresh install of Windows. Now it says that it doesnt recognize the device yet the software is installed"

Did you install Windows with the Hauppauge card installed in the PC?
When you say "software", do you mean the Hauppauge Driver, or the WinTV software? (You don't need to install the WinTV software right away. You can install the driver and the card without it).

i did intsall Windows with the card in it, needless to say this is like the 4th install because i had partitions messed up badly, im learning by trial and error here so forgive my stupidity. But it was working on the first install, lol, sorry have to laugh tho, or ill go mad! im currently using a 6.2 build on my disk, but i went to the support link and upgraded to WinTv7. I did run the hcwclear program to clear out the old drivers and installation after the first Windows install. now im almost done, everything seems to be running smoothly except for the tv. Windows did recognize the first 2 installs, but nothing since. device manager and add a device but show either as still searching for device, or unrecognized. i hope that helps you sorry about the confusion

For everyone: When installing Windows fresh it is best to do so on a simplified system: just the needed components to run the PC, especially just one hard drive. Then, after Windows is installed and all is good you can install the additional components one at a time. The one-at-a-time method allows you to determine a problem component or software immediately - no need to test to hunt down which it is.

For babboo: The Hauppage card should've not been installed when you installed Windows. There is a possibility now that there is some generic Windows driver associated with the device that is either interfering with the driver installation or conflicting with it and that is why the card won't run.

You could try and uninstall the card and it's driver, plus all the Hauppauge - WinTV software, run hcwclear, and then manually clean the registry. In this case it is pretty risk free since "Hauppauge" is not likely to turn up in a registry search for anything other than the card.

To uninstall the card properly, uninstall it from Device Manager first, then shut down the computer, remove the power cord, and then physically remove the card. Then power back on, let the system settle on the desktop, and then uninstall the software and run hcwclear (and possibly the registry edits). Restart the PC again, check to be sure that all Hauppauge Start Menu items, files and folders are deleted, and run through the registry again and restart.

Once you are confident the system is clean you can install the card. Install the driver first, then shut down, remove power, and install the card. When you start up afterward Windows will find the card and the driver and install it correctly.

OY! I just did a search of Wintv on my C drive and I got a major mess going, got like 2 different locations, possibly 3 that have WinTv in their folders, Im pretty sure this is incorrect. Ive ran all the programs on Hcwclear and have rebooted and ran chkdisk. Illgive what you said a shot, ill let you know the outcome.....* I have now got WinTv recognized, but cant get upgraded from build 6 to WinTv7 build 3.5, even tho I have the disk to install upgrades. the downloaded file comes back as "WinTv7_3.5.exe is not a valid Win32 application" so i cant update my drivers....yet. But I want to thank you for all your help and quick response back, much appreciated.

    Couple things:
WinTV (6 or 7) and the Hauppage driver are 2 completely different things. You do not need to install Win TV to install the Hauppauge card. In fact, it is important to properly install the Hauppauge driver and card before installing WinTV.

You can install WinTV7 directly. You do not need to install WinTV6 first.
I assume you have WinTV7 as a download from Hauppauge, but WinTV6 on CD that you got with the card, like I do.
What you do is start the v7 install and you will be asked to insert the v6 CD to verify that you own a product.

From what you say it sounds like you just need to clean up the system and start with a clean slate.

now my Windows says to go to https://hauppauge.lightpath.net for driver update, but when i try and extract from the zip i get The compressed zipped folder 22xxdrv-27323.zip is invalid. Now this is after i have installed the WinTv7 drivers, but system is still not recognizing card. I had it running on version 6 lastnight, but when i went to upgrade, this is what i ran into. ill try installing on WMC, but when i did that lastnight using version 6, i had BSOD.

Your descriptions of symptoms are starting to make it sound like you have a bad TV Tuner card.

Have you tried installing the v7 WinTV directly from the source?:
