I managed to contact Seagate for a general enquiry and got this email back and I thought everyone would appreciate seeing what they say. Although it doesn't say it in so many words they are saying I think that defragging is not good for these drives, I did reply to say that I researching on behalf of the forum and she has listed as you can see the forum as a point of reference -

    "Dear John,

You are absolutely right about one thing, Solid State Drives (SSD) do not need to be defragmented. Doing so may shorten the lifespan of the SSD drive.

Although here at Seagate we are champions of hard drives, please take note that we are not champions of Microsoft (simply because we did not undergo training by Microsoft. Duuh)

But, since I am never one to turn down a friendly request , I have found out a solution which might help you. Basically I went online and found out ways to disable disk defragmentation on an SSD ( you just might never know when you might accidentally do it)

    Please visit the websites below:

    Alternatively, you could also visit:

    Hope that helps John. Cheerio

Jazli.J told you nothing concerning your question.

Ask her if their is a way to defrag the hard drive part without hurting the ssd part.

Ok I'll try but I reckon she is just a front person and not really a techie. The gist of what I read though was no defrag. I read it on Tomshardware and over clockers forums too the majority of folks said no defrag.

    I understand. I wouldn't defrag it either.

I was just wondering if Seagate had a answer.

I contacted them again and no reply as yet so I am going to leave it at no defrag myself after all they (my partner and her daughter) don't use their computers that much so will not fragment that much I reckon.

Well I tried again anyway because the other answer was not well accepted and I got this back today and hopefully it is a little more explicit.
    "Dear John Goard,

Thank you for contacting Seagate support.

We do not advise to defrag Solid State Hybrid Drives because it will affects the performance of the hard drive. These drives build with flash memory and when ever you defrag the number of read and write times will reduce and reduce the life time of the hard drive.

Should you have any further inquiries, please do not hesitate to contact us by phone at the phone numbers listed in the link below according to the country you are located in at the moment during office hours.

Now this is a techie - I am assuming anyway so hopefully it puts the issue beyond doubt even though it still does not specify the flash (SSD) part of the drive.
It still remains that I would not defrag in any case despite who had replied to my enquiry.

That is good enough for me.
