Mouse and Keyboard stop working after "installed". USB and PS/2

I have a very strange problem on a computer we are attempting a repair on. No keyboards or mice, either ps/2 or usb, will work properly on this computer.

The computer is running Windows 7 x64.

The reason why it's very strange is that when I plug in a new mouse or keyboard, one that has not been previously installed, it will work until it has become fully installed. The moment the hardware installation popup says "your devices are ready to use", the device becomes completely unresponsive. Lights remain on the mouse and the numlock light continues to stay on but will not respond to any buttons or keys. The computer's time still ticks and the computer will shutdown properly if the power button is pressed so the computer is not frozen.

The same result occurs in safe mode.

We have tried running the windows 7 recovery disc and running 2 different system restores but neither would complete.

No that doesn't work. As I said, once a device has been plugged in and "installed" it will never work again. It will work fine until it is. So if I were to take another mouse or keyboard that has never touched this computer, it will work while the little icon down by the clock is circling around trying to find drivers and until that thing finally says "your device is ready to use" it will work but once it is finally installed, it will stop working and won't work again.

Is there some way to tell windows 7 not to automatically install drivers when it boots up?

Nobody has any suggestions or solutions?

NO, once the drivers have been loaded, the devices STOP working. THey work UNTIL windows says "your devices are ready to use". So immediately after the computer turns on, they work but after a minute or so they stop working after they are installed. IF the hardware has ALREADY been installed previously, they do not work at all.

I have tried 3 different ps/2 keyboards and 3 different usb keyboards. I Have tried 2 different usb mice and 2 different ps/2 mice. They are NOT wireless.

On startup, the drivers dont load again the device just doesnt work. IF I plug in a NEW device that has never touched the computer, drivers are loaded as expected but after the drivers are installed, it stops working.

You are slightly incorrect when you say "windows has to load drivers or it doesnt work" since windows has native support for ps/2 keyboards and mice, so when windows boots with these devices plugged in, they generally INSTANTLY work (yes I realize there are drivers installed, but there isnt the same install process like other devices). This also occurs with usb but generally with any computer when you plug in usb keyboards and mice, they usually work instantly as well.

I can't get to the device manager since the keyboard and mouse dont work. WHen they DO work, its only for about 10 seconds so not enough time to really do anything with the PC.

Yes it works in the BIOS or anything else outside of windows, including loading windows discs, pxe boot or anything else.

As I mentioned, nothing is wireless and the lights I was referrring to are the numlock light on the keyboard and the optical light on the mouse (which is how the mouse works and also indicates that it has power).

System will load the drivers and things work as they should.
On a shut down and start up the mouse and keyboard drivers are reloading again.

Could you tell us what mouse and keyboard you are using.
Is this the computer in your specs?
We need to the the Specs of your system.

Windows has to load drivers or nothing works.

You could also try this.

In Device Manager remove all keyboard and mouse driver.
Reboot and see what happens.

Does the mouse or keyboard work in bios?
Make sure you try the PS2 mouse in bios also. If a PS2 mouse doesn't work in bios then something strange is going on.

By chance does your mouse and keyboard also have batteries?

Sounds strange but I don't know the hardware in your system.
The only time I can remember a mouse light staying on was when the batteries need replacing or installed.

YOu are correct in those assumptions.

It is Windows 7 x64.

I can only assume it was installed when the computer was built (It's a custom built with the brand name "velocity" on the front)

I'm guessing it's about 3 years old, give or take a year.

I have no history on this computer, only that it used to work and then it stopped and the customer brought it into us. It may be the result of a virus, junkware (tuneup or registry software) or anything else really. The computer also came in because of issues with internet and performance (before the keyboard and mouse issues).

I have never run into this issue before as well, which is why I"m posting here. I am aware that doing a reinstall of the OS will solve the issue however I"d like to find a simpler (and thus more cost effective solution) for the customer.

I have already reset the bios to defaults. USB is enabled. It can't be a bios thing...if it were, they wouldnt work anywhere, not just in windows AFTER they are installed. It's definitely a windows problem.
