Windows 7: System reboots after CPU upgrade

To give you an idea about some models. I have this Professional Platinum Series, AX760 ATX, EPS12V, Fully Modular PSU CP-9020045-EU Corsair and it would be fine for yours maybe even overkill, it is expensive though. V 650S, MODULAR 3D circuit design, Powerfull +12V rail, Custom DC-DC design, Japonese capacitorm, 80 Plus Gold RS-650-AMAAG1-EU The V series cooler master are really good.

Can we get a list of the rest of the components in the system please? Then we can better judge your power needs and price point you require. I understand you want best bang for your buck since your already in with cost of the cpu.

Abit AW9D-MAX Mobo, QX6700 processor, 6 gigs of ram (2x1, 2x2), 180GB Corsair SSD, 1TB regular IDE, Asus HD4890

The guy over at the shop installed the E4400 back into the board for now, installed Windows 7 64 N, got all my drivers and windows updates... now I'm getting random freezes. Thought it was the chipset driver, but even after getting the recommended software from Intel's website, still freezes (and a BSOD I couldn't catch fast enough to read, I'll disable auto-reboot and will write it down if it happens again).

Anyway this system is just begging to be thrown out the window...

It is most likely your psu is eating it and that's why it would not even start up the higher TDP cpu. I would switch it out regardless of other hardware. Any v series is what I would recommend you get in your situation. Also you might have a firmware update that can be done to your ssd to perhaps alleviate your freezing and lengthen its life. What model is the ssd, and more importantly that you have your system back what model is the psu?

The PSU is a Xilence XP600

The SSD is a Corsair Force 3 or something like that, it's been performing quite normally, the Corsair utility says SMART does not report any problems...
