VDU/laptop screen not working...don't know the status of the system

hello there!
am having problems with my laptop:
compaq presario 2100,

it had been some time since i'd used it, and when i tried to start it, the bootup lights were flickering and turning off after a miniute or so.
moreover the screen was blank all the time.

as being a novice in hardware.. would like to solicit some help and tips so as to get any information about the health of the system.

should i run the kaspersky rescue disk?? is it advisable?
