The new monitor also has DVI connector so will work with my existing video card. No built in speakers on either monitor.

We seem to be talking about the same thing - but coming at it from different angles.

I told MEL to use the DVI, because as there is no monitor speaker, no need for the HDMI on monitor.

You replied and said we don't know what the card supports - I said the Monitor would still need an HDMI connection if it did. and you said "no".

The reason I use HDMI is because my monitor does have internal speakers.

Regardless, MEL will still have optimum performance with DVI and she'll be very happy!

And what I said is still true so I am not seeing your point. You don't have to use HDMI just because it is there - speakers or no speakers. But you can, if both monitor and card have HDMI - again, speakers or no speakers.

Yes, you said early on to use DVI, but at that time, we did not know what the card had, or what she was using on the old monitor. So it was not YET established if DVI could be used.

This is why when you asked if the monitor still needs HDMI, I said, "no", because it has Display port and DVI.

With DVI (or D-sub) you have no choice but to also connect an audio cable to speakers.

AND because your card does too! But you don't have to use HDMI. No doubt your monitor also has some other video input, either DVI, D-Sub, or Display port. And no doubt, since your monitor includes speakers, your monitor also has separate stereo audio inputs simply because not all computers/graphics cards support HDMI.

Now that all the facts have been established, we are on the same page.
