5gb of Ram on Dell Dimension E521, HOW?

It says in the Manuel for this computer (Dell Dimension E521) that it can only go up to 4gb of ram but i had 5gb of ram in it and it showed on it in computer property's, so is this safe? it ran like this for a very long time does anyone know about this?
I want to do the same thing to my Dell Optiplex 380 and 320 is this still safe and possible?
any help would be much appreciated TY

Can you take a screen shot of your Computer properties?

Click start > Right-click Computer > Click properties

Use the Snipping tool to take a screen shot and then post it here

Oops, I guess I didn't read the second sentence...

The problem was probably that your old Dimension was a 32bit computer whereas the optiplex supports 64bits. This means that while your computer can see more than 4gb of ram, only 4 will be usable. Whereas a 64bit computer has a much, much larger limit.. Something like 16 terabytes.

In a nutshell, your optiplex will be perfectly fine with more than 4gb of ram.
