    DVD RW Problem

    Hello,

Im new here and i hope im posting this in the right thread, but was wondering if anyone could help me with a problem im having with my DVD ROM on my Sony Vaio Laptop.

I been having problems with some of my dvds that are full with content showing up as a blank DVD but some other dvds i tried seem to work fine.

I did everything i could think of including a factory restore which after doing the DVD ROM was reading my dvds again but then it stopped and went back to showing dvds with data as blank after doing another factory restore again it still giving me the same problem.

I cant figure out why it worked for a minute after doing the first factory restore. I been spending days on this and bout to just buy a new DVD ROM but i cant figure out why it would start working again for a little bit but even before that why can it reconize certin dvds then others dvds i have.

Weird part is the dvds that it can read will show up as recovery 21 when its windows disc i tried many ones and the ones it does read all show up as recovery with a number.

So just wondering if anyone here ever had this problem and if so what was the cause i tried everything from the microsoft fix it and the upper and lower filters in registry cleaning the dvd with air duster and uninstalling the DVD rom and all that any help would be great.

If this is in the wrong thread i do apoligize.

Are the discs you are trying to read commercial discs or are they ones that have been burned either by you or someone else?

Can you read CD's? CD's do not require the Laser (light beam) intensity that a DVD requires.

They are burnt dvd-r discs that i have used before just fine, i have barely used the DVD ROM really. It was working fine after i did a factory restore but then stopped reading/writeing again. I just tested it for CDs and yes it reads cds just fine.

Just the dvds arnt reading and writing but again it worked fine after a factory restore and it would read the DVDs just fine just after doing windows updates and the sony vaio updates is when i tried to use a dvd but they just show up as blank dvds again but a few of the dvds i tried it does seem to read but it will say like recovery 21 when its not even a recovery disc so not sure were its getting that from the dvds that it does read all show up as recovery 21.

Is there away to fix it or is my only hope replacing it?

Well after days of trying everything I could think off and was about ready to get a new one I managed to fix this problem using a qtip and alcohol and gently cleaned the laser eye and now its reading my dvds again, I guess the should be something to try for anyone having the same problem before buying a replacement DVD ROM.

Lasers generally do not need cleaning, but in a laptop they are exposed when the tray is opened and there is a possibility of it getting dirty. That was one of the things I mentioned about the intensity. But, glad to hear you got it going without having to replace it.
