Computer starts freezing randomly after installing an SSD

Hi everyone,

I just got a brand new Samsung 840 EVO 250 GB SSD for Christmas and I believe it's the cause of some problems that have been occurring on my computer since I installed it. After installing the SSD, my computer freezes randomly every now and then. It's not terribly frequent; the computer is usable for reasonable lengths of time, but the amount of times it happens is still very annoying.

When the computer does freeze up, the mouse is still movable, but the desktop is entirely frozen. It's as if my mouse is freely moving around a picture of my desktop because I can't do anything other than move my mouse. Even CTRL+ALT+DEL does nothing. The only way to get out of it is to shut the computer down with the power button and turn it back on. Not only is this irritating but I know that shutting down a running computer with the power button is bad for it. So far every time this has happened is when I'm in the middle of something. It happened when I was just using Chrome, and yesterday it happened when I was playing Skyrim. I'm saving what I'm typing right now as a .txt in case this happens again as I type this.

The only other thing that should be noted is that when I got the SSD, it did not come with a tray to securely screw it into the case, so what I did was take the plastic piece inside the box that the SSD was sitting in, and I used scissors to cut a piece off the side of the plastic, and then put that inside the computer to hold it in there. It actually fit surprisingly well, but three sides of the SSD are laying on plastic right now. Could the freezing be occuring because of heat building up under it? I also used some regular scotch tape to hold it into the plastic piece. Maybe that is causing some kind of electrical problem?

You guys are just so helpful, it's amazing.

Humor aside, I seem to have solved my problem. What I did was take the SSD out of my makeshift rack and just left it hanging inside the case. I also had the SSD connected to a high SATA port, like SATA-6 or something, so I plugged it into SATA-3 right next to where my other DVD Drive and HDD were plugged in, and behold, no more freezing. I suspect that heat was collecting underneath where it sat in the makeshift rack, which caused the problems.

Why did you plugged a very fast SSD with SATA III (6Gb/s) controller into slower SATA II (3Gb/s) onboard connector?
You have created a bottleneck for data transfer.
