External HDD Help

Hello guys and girls, my Silicon Power 640GB HDD has been acting up recently thus getting on my nerves. lol.
So I decided that it would benefit me to regenerate the HDD totally so that all 0s and 1s are changed back to 0s. I am not a power user and don't know if I am doing the process in the right way. I am using KillDisk for Windows to run US DoD 5220.22-M (ECE) (7 PASSES, VERIFY) Erase Method. Will this correct the constant "Can't read files from the source" errors while using the drive or do I have to do some further manipulation?

Hello mxia123,

are you trying to reformat an external HDD of yours? you can use this method: Disk - Clean and Clean All with Diskpart Command

Hello mxia123!

This error you have been receiving, “Can't read from the source file or disk”, did it occur during copy/paste processes you were trying to do?

What kind of files were you trying to activate, how big are they (1GB, 5GB..) and what is the file system on your external drive?

Before reformatting, check if the core of the problem isn't in the cable you are using, if you have all of your USB drivers.

Which OS are you using, is the drive visible in the system, e.g. for Windows – Disk Management, My Computer, for OS X – Finder etc.?

All these factors can help!

And if you are so determined to reformat, do try ShoTTaS's suggestion, or use another software to write full Zeros to the drive.

thanks for your awesome suggestions. i regenerated my HDD finding 1058 bad sectors and repairing all. now everything is great.
