Used Monitor's Power Lead Adaptor Very Hot

    Hi,

I just bought a used Packard Bell monitor as I needed to use 2 monitors at the same time.

And the adaptor box got way hotter than my usual monitor's power cable's adaptor box. It also says LITEON as the manufacturer (the same as my laptop's manufacturer, which makes me think it's a laptop power cable.

Google images seems to back up this theory.

So if this is a laptop power lead, would it cause harm?

From what I can tell from looking at both the backs, the monitor is AC 12v and 3.5A, while its adaptor is AC 12v and 3.33A.

    Would this be incompatible please?

Or could it just be that laptop cables get hotter than monitor power cables?

    thanks a lot

It doesn't sound good. It's one thing if the adapter is used to charge a Laptop battery since once the battery is charged the Laptop will draw less current. But running a monitor I have to assume it's going to pull the same amps all the time. Meaning it will stay hot all the time. That sounds like a fire waiting to happen. I'd look for an adapter that can handle the draw while running warm at most.

That's what I was thinking. The two power supplies must surely work in different ways.

But how do I find a replacement power cable?

I went to Amazon and they only have the standard "kettle" power leads. I can't find the adaptors that go from the kettle power leads to the monitor.

    thanks

Likely the wrong voltage. I wouldn't keep using it that way. My guess is you'll likely find laptop power packs listed instead of monitor power packs. The laptop power packs are the ones that usually fail. You may have to go right to the manufacturer to get the correct power pack.
