    Is the above Wiki credible? Sources? It makes super complicated to properly partition SD cards and USB flash drives.

    Question: What is the easy and safe way to properly partition SD cards and USB flash drives?

    I have heard that advice many times over the years (leave flash drives FAT32). Sorry, no time to find sources right now. Maybe later.

    But here's the thing. Let's assume that a flash drive will last 6 years if you leave it FAT32. What they are talking about is that you could lessen that to something like 5 or 5-1/2 years if you use a more robust file system. It's not that the stick will explode!

    Use folders, not partitions.

In Device Manager, there is a USB Mass Storage Device or an Unknown Device, even when there isn't anything plugged in. This is occurring on a Dell Dimension 5100. This is not the pc in my system specs. How do I fix this? Here are some Device Manager screenshots:
