dell 1545 laptop hdd error code 2000-0142

    hi everyone
dell 1545 inspiron, 3-4yrs old, sata 250gb hd, windows 7 home premium, 64 bit

i've been reading all the hdd helps you all posted re the above error code and tried most things suggested but still not up and running.

first error code 2000-0142 self test unsuccessful status 71, then 200-0146 which i presume is saying it still has previous errors.

originally only got the screen with start windows normally and repair fix (recommended) - both options just flip back to this screen.
inserted original cd, changed load up to cd/dvd, cd opened install windows or repair/fix, chose repair/fix, over 24hrs later it came up with restart your computer, i did but forgot it was still set to load up from cd first, let it start up again, changed the bios to load from internal hdd, it is still reverting to the black screen again with start windows normally or repair/fix again. so obviously not fixed the errors.

i have tried f8 but computer still wont load up properly in any form of safe modes or any other option it gave.

i read about the chkdsk and chkdsk/r etc but not sure where this is to be entered, guess at c:/ but cant get the prompt to type that in.
Ive ordered a sata usb docking station just in case as im using my little girls laptop and hoping if i cant fix my laptop then i might be able to get the info off old hdd - especially all my accounts on sage plus photos. I do have an external storage device which i've put on my daughters laptop but is saying the last back up is aug 2014 which isnt right, i back up every month, so of course panicking now.

any help of any kind would be so grateful please, i'm loathed to take it to the computer shop until i've tried things myself.

    many thanks

    sarah

According to the Dell error code list, the 0142 is "Drive Self Test Failed" and the 0146 is just the log has previous errors. In most cases (all that I've seen) the 0142 says the drive is defective and must be replaced.

If you backed up to a partition on that drive, the backup may be gone too. NEVER backup to a partition on the same drive. If the drive fails usually the backup is gone too.

If you are lucky you will be able to get the user files off the drive. However, if its failed to the point of not being able to access anything then anything after Aug 14 will be lost.

There are companies that specialize in getting data off of failed drives but the costs are prohibitive for most.

Check whether booting from Live Linux enables you to access and copy the data.

For creating a live Lucid Puppy pen drive see my post here and also read the guide referenced in it.

Is there any way of saving a completely unrecognisable hard drive?
