Canon Inkjet i865 - cant find driver

    Hi

I am having MASSIVE trouble installing a "Canon Inkjet i865" printer on my Windows 7 x64 PC. The printer is a few years old but suddenly stopped working. There is lots of ink in it. The green light on the printer is steady.

I have tried uninstalling the driver and but the reinstalling seems to go wrong.

My Windows can see the printer... i.e. Under "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Devices and Printers" when I connect the printer to the USB (2.0) port, the printer appears under "Unspecified" and is called simply "i865".

When I right click on "i865" and click "Troubleshoot", Windows tries to install the latest driver, but it comes back with "i865 doesn't have a driver. Not fixed"

    Under "Troubleshooting Report" I get:
    "Problem with PnP devices Detected
There are problems with some PnP devices."

I am also getting the message:

"Printer driver was not installed. Unable to find a core driver package that is required by the printer driver package."

I also tried installing "a0mwin110ea23" from the Canon website. This ran OK but doesn't seem to have helped. I have turned my anti-viral off (AVG) before doing all of this.

    History
This printer has always worked fine in the past, on a plug and play basis.
I am trying to work out if there is a fault in my PC's drivers or whether I ma just going to be forced to buy a whole new printer. I hope not because it has been a very reliable little printer and I have lots of spare ink cartridges for it.

Do I need to repair windows in some way? Might I have a virus? (I was taken to a very dubious website by google images about 10 days ago. When I got there I was unable to close my browser and I eventually had to turn the computer off by the mains!)

I tried running a System Restore but this seemed to fail (it got stuck "preparing" to do a system restore for about 45 minutes and eventually I had to reboot by brute force!)

    - Any suggestions?

    J

Yes I already have Malewarebytes installed and running. But I just did an update and ran a scan earlier today. For completeness I am doing it again.

Yes, I installed that without the system complaining, but the problem appears to be that the only thing to install is an "add-on module" ("Canon Inkjet Printer Driver Add-On Module") and not the driver itself.

    More shortly

    Hi

Your link defaults to the same Win7 "add on" that I have already tried, and which requires that the driver is already in place.

    > Printer Driver Add-On Module Ver.1.10 (Windows 7/7 x64) 07/20/11
    > File Name: aomwin110ea23us.exe
    >
    > This software is a module that expands the functionality of the printer
    > driver for Canon Inkjet printers. Your printer must be installed via
    > Microsoft Update before you download and use this module. By installing
    > this software, you can use the printer...

So then I tried changing my O/S to "Windows XP"

    > i860 v1.73e Printer Driver for Windows XP 07/25/08
    > File Name: i860xp173eusZ.exe

During installation it talks about the "BJ Printer Driver" which sounds wrong - surely my printer is an InkJet not a BubbleJet? Also surely my Windows is x64 not x32 so that may be a problem too. But I temp disabled my AV software and continued. But it goes straight to "Installation incomplete. The printer driver has not been installed."

I then had a look under Windows XP (x64) but there is no driver for that O/S. :^(

    Any other suggestions?

P.S. I am starting to think that either the printer is faulty OR that I have a virus. But I dont know how to discover which it is... !

Lots of people have had problems with your Printer and Windows 7 ... Printer 32 bit Drivers can work on Windows 7 ...

According to Microsoft your Printer is compatible with Windows 7 ...

It states that Windows Update supply's the Driver ...

Though I am not convinced of that ...

To get clear - the printer has been working fine until a couple of days ago.

    > Have read that some people have Manager to Install the Printer ... Through Device and Printers add ...

Can you say any more about this?
What do you mean by "Manager" ?

It looks like there is a way of installing a driver manually, but only if you have the driver located somewhere!
