I saw a cartoon related to this and I'm, now kicking myself for not making a copy of it. It showed two people in the first frame lamenting the existence of 14 types and saying someone should create a cable to replace them all. The next frame states there are now 15 types of cables.
All seriousness aside, the intent behind type C is good and the implementation appears to be brilliant but, sadly, until all hardware that uses the earlier type sockets have gone to Computer Never Never Land, we will be saddled with multiple types of USB cables and/or adapters. Adding insult to injury, before type C can become truly universal in actuality, the need for a new cable type will have arisen.
I find it ironic that a cable standard called Universal Serial Buss has become anything but.
