USB ext HD connected SATA shows as unrecognized USB device. Firmware?

I have a Seagate Free Agent ext HD and USB connector went bad so I removed the drive and connected it bare with SATA. It shows in drive manager and works fine. But in device manager it shows as unrecognized USB device. In Seatools it shows as 2 identical drives. Seagate tech support says it is a firmware issue and can't be fixed. Are they giving me accurate info?

Turned out it wasn't the drive. I reinstalled Seatools and it sees one drive correctly. The unknown device was my card reader. I unplugged it from the MB and re attached it. Problem solved.
