    ... hardware connection/disconnection notifications

one or two might remember l had issues with detections which l eventually narrowed down to my keyboard or at least l had assumed it was my keyboard.

however lm experiencing more strange occurrences.. for example, when l connect an external sometimes l first hear a disconnecting device sound before the device detection sound. however for the past day or two lve been randomly hearing a disconnection sound randomly.. l really wish there was a way to find out what is detecting or disconnecting..

I was getting the Device Disconnect when restoring from Hibernate (which I just recently set-up) and searched high & low for how to find what was causing it, to no avail. For everything else Windows logs, it does not seem to log these events.

But I hope someone here knows something about this because all I did to salve my irritation was to turn-off the "device disconnect" Sound in Windows!

l kinda dislike turning off system sounds, every beep can be useful when things go wrong :/ tho it really annoys me l cant find out the issue one thing l did find in event viewer around the time l heard the sound tho was the following entery that l didnt recognise which was called gupupdate (l didnt really find any information within said log to suggest what it was).

the other thing l noticed was the VSS service (Shadow Copy from what l from what l see), which l have noticed once before was executed around the time l received a ghost detection sound.

I don't know if can be done but are you trying to install VSS (Shadow Copy) to another drive other than "C"?

What does your desktop system look like?
    How many USB connected printers?
    How many USB connected devices?
Any USB hubs (powered or unpowered)?
The external HDD: is it USB powered or with separate power supply?

not trying to do anything related to VSS, it just seems to run allot. now l would have disabled the service, but lm given to understand it is an integral part of system restore which means it is part of the service which creates restore points and such.

as for devices connected, devices normally connected via usb are my wireless adapter, mouse, keyboard and sound card (which is one of the older soundblaster cards) also everything except mouse and keyboard are on usb 3.0. with regards to my externals they are all powered externally and are only connected when l require them.

I'm suspecting that one of your USB devices is going offline, or going into low power mode, and when that happens you will get that disconnect sound.
I have a two printers here that do that. After about 15 min they go into power saving mode and (technically) go offline and I get the Boop-Doop sound.

You could try disconnecting things one at a time for a while just to see if the sound goes away while the device is disconnected. That would at least narrow it down to which device Windows thinks (or knows) is going offline.

TVeblen has some good suggestion that should isolate the problem down.

I was think that if you had something scheduled that might be waking up a usb connected hardware.

tbh l dont think its any of my usb devices.. because the num lock is always on so it cant be the keyboard, the mouses underneath doesnt go off, the wireless doesnt disconnect when it happens and l hear a sound which means it isnt my external sound card... and this is why its so confusing.

could this be the reason? and is there any way to stop it from doing it?
