Unable to copy files off of my external drive

    Hello,

I have an external 1TB drive that has some of our family videos that I need to copy off of. I seems drive is about to die soon. I can browse all the files and folders. I can even copy some of the small files. However, if I try to copy anything of decent size or multiple files, it simply does not copy. For example, I tried copying a 4gb video files; it start the copy process with 12mbps speed but after about 3-4 seconds, it simply stopped. You could tell that copy process is still active but nothing is being copied as time to complete starts to increase.

I have ran Crytal Info utility to gather some details (below)

    Thank you for any help.

    Hello DJDJDJDJ!

From what I can read from the SMART results, the drive seems to need more than the usual time to fully spin up; it has a few reallocated sectors, which means that the drive has found read/write/verification errors and has moved the data to the spare area. There seem to be some partial failures in the mechanical positioning system. It could be nothing, but the seek time performance is low which could be a sign of problems in the mechanical subsystem, meaning your drive most likely has a mechanical problem. It also has many spin start attempts.

I believe these issues, resulting in a mechanical failure of the drive, are the culprit for the problem you're having with transferring your files.

My advise would be to take the drive to a professional and see if it could be repaired so that you can copy paste your videos on your own. Otherwise, you may need to turn to a data recovery company.

    Good luck!

Thank you CK_WD. You don't happen to know of someone in the London, UK area for this service, do you?

    You're welcome! :)

    No, I'm afraid I don't.

You could do a google search on trusted repair shops in your area, read comments and rating, if there are such. Another option is to research your drive's manufacturer's website if he has any information or provided repair assistance.

    Cheers! :)
