I trust that that non-booting is a good thing.

These Smart results seem pretty clear. I would say you're on firm ground. But even new drives can fail suddenly. Smart is only a probability game. Always be backed up, image and data.

What drive is best for you depends on what you're doing and your budget. There is nothing like an SSD for the OS, even a small one, with a secondary HDD drive for data. Short of that there are hybrids, and for laptops the 7200 rpm drives are an excellent step up.

I use Win7 99% of the time. I have virtual machines in Linux, and various boot disk utilities that use linux

Some users say SSD drain a laptop's battery more.......how far is that correct?

I would think the SSD would use less power, due to no mechanics. But I've not looked into it.

    Thanks for your reply.

So I can have the WD Scorpio Black 72K on my lap, and replace the WD Blue 54K 8 MB with a SSD or both with SSD......

Budget is not really an issue want performance.

Are SSD , quiet, cooler drain laps battery less?

    Thanks

What exactly do you imply by " I trust that that non-booting is a good thing."

Are the results of Black WD Scorpio 72K fine?

Am new to SSDs, can they be partitioned, can I use it for both OS and data, do I need to defrag it etc?

Can W7 of WD be transferred exactly to it?

    Thanks.

That Kingston drive would not be my first choice.

Look at Crucial, Samsung, or Intel.

If your machine holds 2 hard drives, the typical idea would be to put Windows and applications on a smallish SSD and to put all personal files on a larger standard HDD.

If your machine holds only 1 hard drive, you could do either of the following:

1: Use a relatively small SSD to hold Windows and applications, with all personal files going on an external drive probably connected by USB cable.

2: Use a relatively large SSD and make 2 partitions on it. Put Windows and applications on one partition. Put all personal data on the other.

Which you would do depends on budget and personal preference.

This excludes whatever you care to do about backups of Windows or personal data.

Yes, you could transfer your Windows installation from hard drive to the SSD, but the procedure can fail, so you might want to consider a clean install instead.

    Do NOT defrag an SSD.

Thanks for posting your expert comments.

    1. Both my machines, i.e desktop and lap can hold only 1 drive.

    2. What exactly do you mean by smallish and large........would you consider 240 GB SSD small or medium?

    I'd call 240 medium.

    Windows is about 20 gb.

I have Windows and about 55 applications on C and the total space occupied is 38 gb. I do NOT keep personal data on C.

You should decide your method before you pick a size.

Decision points for the method would be stuff like:

Do I want to keep personal data on the SSD?

How much space am I currently using on C?

How much of that is data, not Windows and applications?

Do I want to use an external drive to store data?

Or do I insist on storing data on an internal drive?

Is my PC capable of holding a second internal hard drive if I wanted to do that?

Do I have a realistic expectation of the advantages of an SSD? Do I think it will turn night into day?

What is my total budget for hard drives?

After you have decided on those types of questions, then start thinking about SSD size.
