Booted in safe mode, Now no internet or usb's are working

Hey guys. I just joined and am not sure if this thread goes here but I really need some help.
I have a dell laptop XPS L502 with bios version a01 which I've found is way outdated because i reset the pc a while ago. Yesterday I was trying to upgrade from windows 7 premium 64 bit to windows 8.1. Now 8.1 was on a USB I got from my flatmate who has alot of pc knowledge and he said I'd need to boot from the usb. Tried it but to no avail, so I tried to go into my bios but nothing showed up? He said I should try going into the laptop set up cause it might be something to do with a safe mode boot being changed that is stopping it from reading. So I put safe mode boot on and restarted the laptop. I managed to get into the bios and found it was an out of date version so I went to login to download an update for it. I exited the bios and then the laptop booted into safe mode (basic ) I think it was, so I logged off because I couldn't use it to get on the internet. When I logged back in in NORMAL mode All of a sudden I no longer have wireless access, ethernet access, and both my USB's no longer work.

I've tried redoing the network drivers from my dell disk but it says "cannot install this package on your pc". So I went into device manager and saw that networking isn't there at all??? No drivers or adaptors? My USB's are there and it says they're all working fine but nothing connects when I plug into them.

Any help would be great, as I know I could restore my Laptop to factory with the disk I have but I will only do it as a last resort as I have some stuff I would rather not put back on/ delete.

    Regards Liam

    Hi Liam,

You may want to install the latest chipset driver for your laptop.

Burn or Copy the driver into a CD or DVD.
then run it through the CD/DVD Rom.

You can use another computer to download the drivers.

I guess I'd just get the chipset driver from dell's website?? I re-instaslled I think it was the chipset driver off my drivers disk but nothing. I'll try burning the new one to a cd and load it up. Sorry for my ignorance but do I just need to put it in the cd drive and drag off /install. Or do I have to boot of the cd? Also any other ideas that i could try ?

You just need to burn the installer then open it up in the computer. Theres no need to boot it.
