If you don't mind a 3rd party tool - windows vista - Hide internal USB device from "Safely remove hardware" - Super User - a bit expensive for my taste though

Would this make sense to you? From networking - How to prevent Windows from safely removing hardware? - Server Fault - You would need to find a way to alter it to fit your situation
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services[your network adaptors keys]. Check under the Enum key, make sure it is a PCI and not USB entry. Under each network adaptor key, create a DWORD DisableRemovable with data value of 1. This doesn't stop the NIC from being removed but it does reconnect it properly.

Find what time USB drive was ejected
Hi, I've misplaced my USB drive and I'm almost positive I left it in one of my school's computers, but it's no longer there. If I can find out when the USB drive was ejected, I might be able to track it down. Does anyone know if this is possible? Thanks, Tony

WinExp collapses if DVD is ejected because of auto-rem. empty drives?
Assume I open WinExplorer and click on the CD-ROM/DVD drive letter E: The whole DVD content is shown. Fine. Now I eject the DVD by opening the tray. As a result the whole WinExplorer collapses and auto-closes itself. UI guess because drive is automatically removed then a drive is empty. ...
