Mouse stops; unplug, replug, starts again

Logitech optical mouse, on a USB extension cable due to location of CPU, has developed a bad habit of stopping, which can be easily determined by turning mouse over and observing that there is no red light emanating therefrom.

I can crawl under computer table, unplug recalcitrant mouse from the USB extension cable, plug it back in, and mouse resumes working. No pattern as to when the fault will occur. Any thoughts as to where the problem might lie, as in the mouse, the cable, my failure to provide sufficient cheese for the mouse to nibble on?

What does you cpu location have to do with the way your mouse works?

You probable have a bad extension cable to the mouse. Or maybe just a bad connection.

The location of the cpu dictates the use of the USB extension cable, as clearly delineated in my original post. That, in turn, leads to your suspicion that it is that extension cable that is defective; if the cpu were located elsewhere (which cannot be done), I might well not have an extension cable, and by extension also not have a problem with the way that the mouse works.

Well I have built a few computers and you surly got me confuse.

Your usb mouse should be plugged into the motherboard I/O panel or the tower usb port which has nothing to do with the location of your cpu.

Your just smarter than me so I will just watch and see what happens.

    Just a note:

I know exactly what is in your first post because I did read it.

    Have a nice day.

There is nothing confusing about this: The USB extension cable is plugged into a USB socket on the CPU tower, and the mouse is plugged into the other end of the USB cable.

Why? Because, given the location of the CPU, the cable attached to the mouse will not reach the CPU.

Therefore, the physical location of the CPU dictates the use of a USB extension cable for the mouse.

Perhaps you are simply not aware of the extremely common use of the term "CPU" to mean the computer; this is considered acceptable English usage. I would venture to say that the vast majority of computer users don't really know what a CPU is, but they do know that "CPU" stands for "computer," at least in American English. If my use of this idiomatic usage is what has you confused, I apologize.

Perhaps I ought to have used the Old English or Anglo-Norman word for "computer," but I don't happen to know them, and my dictionaries for such abstruse languages don't show any such entries....

Perhaps you should ease up on the sarcasm, as it does not help your inquiry.

As a matter of interest CPU stands for Central Processing Unit & not computer, as you can see from this website.

Central processing unit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Layback Bear has said it is very likely that either your mouse lead or the extension lead could be faulty.

There was no sarcasm implied nor used, I was simply explaining language as it is used.

    Examples:

Do you know that there is a difference between "fire engine" and "fire truck"? Do you care, so long as the fire was put out? Not likely. Do I care? Yes I am a retired fire chief, who even knows that there is a difference between a tanker and a water tender. For most people, the terms are interchangeable; what to me is a misuse is not so to most other people.

Do most people know that "diesel locomotives" are actually diesel-electric or the rare diesel-hydraulic locomotives? No, and they don't care, they only know that the trains are either pulled or pushed by diesel locomotives. Again, examples of misuse that don't matter in the majority of cases.

Do you know or care that the Battle of Hastings was not fought at Hastings, the Battle of Bunker Hill was not fought on Bunker Hill, the Charge Up San Juan Hill did not take place on San Juan Hill? Do those facts matter to you or to most people? Of course not, they convey the idea; they matter to me, as I am an historian.

Yes, I know the technical definition of CPU, but that is not what is implied nor understood by what I believe to be the vast majority of computer users. I am not a computer technician, just a user who uses common terminology that is understood by most of we members of the computing Hoi Polloi.

As for the problem with my mouse, yes, I am aware that either the mouse lead or the extension lead may be at fault, but that does not give me any hints as to possible ways, other than the usual item substitution, to find out which it is, and that is the reason that I posed the original question.
