Trouble partitioning new WD Elements 1 Tb drive

I'm using a Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit machine.
I've a brand new WD Elements 1 TB external hard drive and I'm trying to set it up.
I've been using Windows Disk Management to try to make two partitions in the 1 Tb drive. I've deleted the original partition and made a new one of 475 Mbs. When I try to make a partition of the remaining unallocated space, I get so far using the wizard and then it sticks and the whirling icon just carries on. The Disk Management programme says it is not responding. Making the first partition was perfect.
Any suggestions please ?

Why would you make a partition of 475 Mbs, whatever that is ?

Download and use Partition Wizard to setup up the drive.

Delete the entire drive to unallocated space, then create, format and align your first partition, when that`s done, then create and format the 2nd, use NTFS for both partitions.

If it`s just for storage, you can make both partitions Logical partitions.

Thank you !

For Mbs read Gbs - a slip of the mind !!

When talking in terms of space there is no such thing as Gbs it`s GB= Gigabyte

Tb means Tuberculosis :)

TB Terabyte
GB Gigabyte
MB Megabyte
KB Kilobyte (or kB but you never see that)

We only use a small b when referring to speed (most of the world anyway)

Gbps Gigabits per second
Mbps Megabits per second

Class dismissed :)

But seriously, did you fix the problem yet ?

Hi there.

You can try to partition the drive with CMD. What you have to do is:

1. Open the Start Menu, type diskpart, press Enter.

2. After that type list disk, press Enter.

3. The type select disk X (where X is the number your drive shows up as), press Enter.

4. After that type create partition extended [size=n], press Enter.

5. Type exit and press Enter.

Hope this helps and best of luck! :)

I finished school many many years ago and there are too many things for my old mind to remember - but thanks for the lesson !

Yes, I fixed the partitioning problem with the Minitool Partition Wizard. It worked very well first time.

Thank you very much !

Thank you also MightyMiroWD - I had managed as above before I saw your advice.
