Motherboard problem, no signal to monitor from 2 different video cards
Hi, I've searched Google and Reddit for days but nothing worked. I hope someone can help.
--------System:
Windows 7 Pro 64bit, purchased OEM version
Asus VG248QE 24" monitor
Asrock Z77 Extreme6 motherboard
Intel i5 3570k CPU, no overclock
8 gigs Corsair RAM
Gigabyte Nvidia GTX970, no overclock, no SLI, upgraded last December from Gigabyte GTX660
750w Corsair power supply
self built rig that's worked fine for years.
--------Problem:
My Nvidia GTX970 is not sending a video signal to the monitor but my computer starts because I get the windows flute sounds when it goes to the desktop. I tested multiple Display port cables & monitors. video card power cables are plugged in and fans spinning.
--------How it started:
It first happened a month ago when I tried to wake up my PC from sleep by tapping the space bar as I usually do. The computer woke up but the monitor stayed black and put up a little box saying "No Signal". I fixed it by putting in an older Video card (GTX660) and everything worked. so I reinstalled the GTX970 and then it worked fine.
A few days ago it happened again. But now both video cards won't work. I get no signal at all from my GTX970 but with my GTX660, I get to the Post screen and then the "windows starting" screen, then display goes black with no signal but I get the windows starting flute sound, so I know windows to the desktop.
--------Things I've tried but with no fix:
- Since I can get to post screen with the GTX660, I go into safe mode. Then at the desktop, I go to device manager and disable the nvidia video card. so then I restart and now I can get to the desktop. but now I have a smaller screen on the monitor and I'm not using the Nvidia drivers. Only when the video card is disabled in device manager, I can then restart to the desktop.
- I have the display port cable plugged into the video card the whole time, not the integrated video on the motherboard. I tested all the Displayport connections. (2 on the GTX970 & 1 on the GTX660) I don't have a DVI cable.
- I clean installed the current and 2 past Nvidia drivers and still no signal for both video cards. The GTX660 gets me to the post and "windows starting" screens before going black with no signal. I've installed and reinstalled each card numerous times
- Besides uninstalling the nvidia graphics driver, I also uninstalled the video card from device manager to get a clean start.
- I have the latest bios update.
- I unistalled all Nvidia software I had (HD audio & PhysX software) and reinstalled only the driver
- I disabled the Intel HD integrated video in the device manager and left the Nvidia video enabled to check if any conflicts are happening. same problem.
- I made sure the primary graphics adapter in bios is set to PCI Express
- I turned the monitor off and back on, turn the pc power supply off then on.
- I installed the GTX660 in the other PCIe slot near the power supply, I manually installed nvidia drivers. didn't work, so I put it back to the PCIe slot near the CPU.
- I set power options to never turn off monitor.
- I unplugged an external usb drive just in case
- I made sure safe boot is disabled in bios
- I don't have an internal speaker so I never hear a beep when I start the PC.
- I never got a BSOD by the way. Windows works fine, I just don't get signal when the nvidia drivers load.
I think the problem is my motherboard, I'm planning to go to a local pc repair place to test both video cards. If they are fine, I'll then reset the cmos and reinstall windows.
If that don't fix it, I'll just buy a new motherboard and upgrade to an i7 and have to buy a new OEM Windows7 Pro.
Thanks for reading this long post.
