SD Card Slot on HP Desktop suddenly stopped recognizing cards

I have an HP desktop running Win 7 Pro. My DSLR uses SD cards, and I have always been able to insert the card into the slot, have a little green light come on, then a few seconds later have the card launch a new instance of Windows Explorer showing the card as Drive G. Suddenly (within the last 48 hours or so), the computer can no longer read a card. I tried disabling and re-enabling the drive letter, tried uninstalling, and rebooted twice. Nothing worked.

When I insert a disk and try to view its contents, I get an error message that says, "Please insert a disk into Removable Disk (G). The drive is identified as "Generic- Compact Flash USB Device", and it says that it is "working properly".

The SD card is fine. I have two different SD cards, and I can open both of them on other computers without any problems, but neither one can be opened on this computer. I have checked for driver updates, and I am told that I am using the current driver. Could the slot have just died?

Hi yes it could have died. but go to hp support site and see if they have an updated driver for the card reader.

HP Update says that there are no new updates or software for my system. This leads me to believe that it is a hardware failure.

Try rolling back the driver then reinstalling the latest driver.

Or try rolling back the driver and see if it works and then reinstall the latest driver again.

Thanks for the help. I guess I am going to write this off as a hardware failure.
