Hi guys,

One tech question i have this PC:

1) Asus P8Z68-V Pro/Gen3 (It says it accepts 1600Mhz without OC)
https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8Z68V_PROGEN3/specifications/
2) Intel 3770k (Accepts 1600Mhz memory Dual Channel)
3) RAM 8G Memory DDR3 8GB 1600Mhz Kingston HyperX Fury HX316C10F/8 Blue

By default my pc memory is running at 1333 Mhz since 3 years ago, if i want the memory to run at 1600 that would be overclocking despite the mobo says it supports 1600 without OC?

Cheers

Did you try loading XMP values in BIOS or setting them to Auto? If it doesn't change just modify the multiplier if such setting is applicable.

Hi, i use my bios by default, Memory frequency says: auto. and the value on bios currently is 1333Mhz.

If i change that value to 1600Mhz manually, would that be overclocking?

As GokAy says, try to set memory at XMP mode in BIOS.
Enter BIOS advanced mode, go to Ai Tweaker tab, click Ai Overclock Tuner and choose XMP.
Targer DRAM speed should be set at 1600 MHz then.

Not if the RAM is rated at 1600Mhz. You don't need to manually change it if you have the XMP option available.

Thanks Guys.

Now i'm afraid to fry my machine, i guess i'm gonna leave it by default at 1333Mhz, I was just curious a relative bought an imac 5k last week, the box says 8Gb DDR RAM at 1600 Mhz, i was wondering why that machine was running at those speeds without overclocking by default...perhaps is the haswell architecture? i assume that is 1600Mhz by default?

Who defines the architecture the mobo or the processor? As far as i know its the MOBO so mine is sandy bridge but my processor is ivy bridge. i've been told the sandy bridge architecture has memory speeds at 1333 Mhz by default.

There's no risk on setting the XMP profile to run your RAM at 1600MHz. I have the Kingston HyperX Genesis and had to set my XMP profile to run at 1600MHz as it was only running at 1333MHz. 1333MHz is the default setting that RAM will run at when installed, that's what XMP profiles are there for.

You won't fry your PC, but up to you of course. You won't notice any difference anyway I believe.

But that would be overclocking according to this...

The Intel® Extreme Memory Profile

Intel® Extreme Memory Profile (Intel® XMP) allows you to overclock compatible DDR3/DDR4 memory to perform beyond standard specifications. It’s designed to enhance the gaming features built into Intel® technology–based PCs. If you like to overclock and squeeze as much performance from your PC as possible, then memory based on Intel XMP gives you that extra edge you need to dominate—without breaking a sweat.1

Intel and Overclocking DDR3/DDR4 Memory

I don't want to overclock specially if i won't notice any difference.

So the imacs are a little overclocked by default?

1333MHz is standard specifications. The RAM is manufactured to run at 1600MHz, overclocking is pretty poor wording for it in this instance. Mine's been running at 1600MHz for over two years and it's fine.

Hey Boozad do you know if the imacs are overclocked at 1600 Mhz by default or the new haswell architecture has those memory speeds by default?

Check this image, DDR3 /1600Mhz

It's not the Haswell architecture, I'm running an i7-4790k (previously an i5-4670k) and I had to set the XMP profile both times. I don't really know much about iMacs to be honest so I couldn't say whether they have XMP profiles or whether the RAM is set manually.
