Nice progress, odd the Asus board would not want to read it.

I have been thinking too the Asus is an EUFI BIOS and this machine an old legacy BIOS - do you reckon that could have something to do with it although the drive was seen the first time I put it on via the USB / SATA adaptor on that Asus machine?

Next thing I am wondering what to do is whether to just go ahead and clean the drive, create it as one partition, format it, and set it as active. I am not real good with this sort of stuff to be honest. I used to just prepare SSD's as WHS (Wolfgang) used to use to align the SSD before the first use but that always seemed to create an empty partition at the front of the drive.

I will scratch through the tutorials unless anyone knows of what is the best thing to do and then try on the Asus when I get back to Lynne's place and maybe see what is "seen" it and go from there.

As a science project this has turned out to be a heck of a ride

    Surprising update:

I have just connected that drive that I cloned my tester machine's C: drive to and it worked fine booted to Windows in no time at all in the tester machine. I then have connected the new drive with the clone still on it to my new laptop via my USB / SATA adaptor which has the EUFI BIOS the same as the Asus has and is running Windows 7 Pro exactly as the Asus is too.

It has shown up in Computer / Manage / Device Manager and I formatted it from there and guess what it is now showing as a normal drive. The clone has been wiped - well formatted off and it looks ready to take on another clone - see pic so my suspicions re the different BIOS have to be wrong.

Hopefully when I get back to Lynnes' place and the Asus tomorrow the clone might go as I want it to. I have no idea of what has gone on it seems a complete fluke on my part or I hit the right buttons.

Sounds like one of the machines bios Boot/ CSM is on uefi only instead of uefi and legacy for Boot device control ?

As for your issue with whs's tutorial it happened to me too a small partition was created at the beginning of the drive,
I believe it was because I didn't do list partitions to see it and make the smaller partition active to install on it instead of the larger one
    It was about 20gb

I didn't have the issue after using clean on a new evo though but I installed on the entire ssd and resized it after the install with disk management

DO you really need to manually align? It seems to be a thing of the early days. I haven't bothered with it on my 850Pro and no issues. You can check with AS SSD the alignment by the way, if you don't want to manually calculate.

ASUS being UEFI should have no impact when SSD is a secondary drive. only when trying to boot from it.

Ok back at my place and I did try the clone last night twice and twice it stopped because of a "broken pipe" whatever that is - however I am beginning to suspect it is the drive I am trying to clone is the problem.

One thing tough even though that drive is showing in Partition Wizard it is not showing in Computer but is in Disk Management

So as I have a 7 Pro ISO I am going to swap the drive in and see if it will load the 7.

Ok update I cleaned the new drive that I thought was bad and it came up unallocated because even making it a GPT disk didn't work.

Now I have clean installed from that ISO I had saved before they took it away and it installed.

The only problem was I couldn't connect to the net so I downloaded the LAN driver onto a stick on my trusty tester machine and installed it on the new install and low and behold I have connected to the net and am currently downloading the hoard of updates.

So it is now just a matter on reinstalling the email etc etc and my personal data pics etc

That is where I am up to now and all being well I shall have the larger rive to play with now once all that is done.

In anticipation thanks to all that have helped me thus far I really do appreciate it.

Is the not working clone from another Samsung? Sometimes Samsung Magician causes issues when cloned. Not sure if broken pipe is caused by it though. Or perhaps another program that has added a upper/lower filter driver.

I don't know mate I cannot find anything much about broken pipes either. The original drive a 250GB 850 PRO I think must be bad or corrupted so I have installed or am clean installing on the new 500GB 850 EVO and I know it is a pain but at least I won't need to clone when the drive would have got a bit full up.

It is just lucky I saved the ISO when Greg's tutorial still had them available albeit with IE8 I actually saved the Home and Pro 32 and 64bit versions my reasoning at the time was somewhere down the track I would need one for a fix for someone. Anyway the last of the first 202 updates is just about done now and then I can get on with fixing the drive in properly and the secondary drive I keep in the machine for imaging - a 120GB SanDisk Extreme that has been a blinder since I got it. I just didn't want to stick it all back together again and still have a no go.

This machine has been a headache since day one and I am my own worst enemy in that I bought it from EBay - new (something I always advise people not to do) but it turned out to be a machine made in and for the US. The support from Asus global and "local" (call centre in the Philippines) got me nowhere and by sheer luck the "local" people mentioned the Asus service centre in Sydney and a young fellow called Will had me put right well within an hour. That little exercise went on for five months just about and I was ready to get rid of the machine but hopefully all's well now.

We did have a few cases where Samsung Magician did cause issues while and after cloning. You possibly had it installed if original was a 850 Pro :) but nevermind since it is passed now.

You can unlock any edition with your current ISOs by the way. See Windows 7 Universal Installation Disc - Create, I have a single 4GB ISO which can install any edition (32 and 64 bit). (Don't have Enterprise but even them are possible)
