Disk drive won't open when I press the button

I've got a 1-2 years old Dell XPS-8300 pc and when I press the button to open the disk (CD) drive nothing happens. The only way to open it is using the Eject function on the computer which is a bit long-winded especially as the Format function is next to it. Oddly if it's already open pressing the button will close it.

Any fixes? The fact that it responds to closing suggests it's not a physical button issue. Could it be having the terrible twos tantrum?

I have had this problem on many occasions and now have a straightened paper clip nearby to poke into the small hole next to the cd / dvd tray door. Press the eject button on the tray door and poke the clip into the tiny hole this will usually open the drive door which is a hassle but better than listening to the tray trying its hardest to open and failing. If you don't poke the clip in fast enough the tray usually wont open but just repeat with the clip already inserted into the hole works for me. Not very techy but it does the job, you could also replace the drive of course. The clip method only applies if the tray is trying to open, if there is a problem with the pc not doing this then the clip method will not work so sorry if this is the case.

Try this tutorial -- it adds an Eject/Close command to the Content Menu (ie right click Desktop).

Eject and Close CD/DVD Tray - Add to Desktop Context Menu
