Folks,

I've found that all my drives (SSDs and spinners) are set to 512 bytes/sector. My understanding is that 4k sectors would be a bit more efficient. I'd like to change my drives from 512 to 4k.

If I format a new drive to 4k, then I cannot clone an old 512 drive to the 4k.

If I use a new, 4k formatted drive, I =could= manually copy my data files from the 512 to the 4k, right?

The issue would seem to be the OS drive. I really, really, really don't want to reinstall the OS. (Really.) I've got too many programs to reinstall.

My system uses an SSD as the OS drive and a 1Tb WD spinner as the data drive.

How can I swap to 4k sectors?

Thanks,
Ken

Thanks.
Doing some more research, it seems I've confused "sectors" with "clusters".
Sigh.

I'll close this and mark it "solved".
Thanks,
Ken

Just to make this clear:

The sector size is an inherent characteristic of the drive and cannot be changed. 512 bytes was the most common size but many newer drives are now 4096 bytes (4 K).

A cluster consists of one or more sectors. The default and most commonly used size is 4 K. This is set when the volume is formatted.
