Removed drive with write cache enabled "unsafely". Advice please?

    Hey,

I have a 1TB western digital external hard drive. It was infected by a virus and started slowing my computer down a lot, so i disconnected it, as my computer wasn't even responding enough to safely remove hardware.

Since caching was enabled, I was wondering if it is the drive that is destroyed or the controller.

The drive failed its S.M.A.R.T test, but can be successfully formatted using linux and can be detected by windows, but for a very short time.

The activity light just flashes without end.

The device is gone for sure, but I was wondering if maybe a new external enclosure might help.
I'm not worried about data, the drive was formatted a few times after the virus to help return it to its original speed and working capability.

    Any advice?

    Thanks in advance

Sounds like a reformat would be needed to me or possibly try booting into Safe Mode...
