    SSD as external backup drive?

I move my laptop between two locations with docking stations that have eSATAp(owered) ports, and I'm thinking of getting a 240-480GB SSD to carry between the two locations, to make backups on i.e. daily documents and periodic image backups. What I like about this idea is that I can just have a single eSATAp cable at each location, and carrying the 2.5" SSD along with the laptop is trivially easy and less dangerous than a HDD (e.g. if dropped).

My question has to do with use of an SSD in this scenario i.e. are there any down-sides as an external device? Does "TRIM" work with an eSATA drive or don't I care about that?

    Any thoughts are welcome. :)

Yeah, thanks, I was looking at high-capacity e.g. 128GB USB flash sticks and a 240GB SSD costs just $60 bucks today at the Egg. It seems eSATA and USB3.0 as interfaces are "comparable" although I don't know about the memory used in sticks vs. 2.5" drives.

Some part of me thinks 2.5" drives oughta run cooler and be more reliable than USB sticks.

Dunno about cooler, but USB sticks are generally constructed so poorly that I'd be very reluctant to rely on them for anything significant, regardless of price or speed. They are a merely a convenience that can come apart in your hands or drop dead at any moment. In my personal experience.

I use a Samsung 500 gb for backups and clones with out problems.
I have use it with eSata, USB 3.0 and HotSwap sata and all worked well.

I sure does make it quicker. SSD to SSD is the way to go unless you have huge backup.
