4G memory installed 2G usable 64bit system

Hi, everyone,
I have upgraded my system from 2G to 4G(2 X 2G). I am using the windows 7 64 bit ultimate version. The laptop is hp dv6500z.
The problem is: from the system information, it say "4G installed (2G usable)".
Can any one tell me how to fix this?

Originally, I use 2X1G pc2-5300 memory, and I am using 2*2G pc2-6400 memory. But it is said to support the pc2-6400 memory from the RAM Memory Upgrade: Dell, Mac, Apple, HP, Compaq. USB drives, flash cards, SSD at Crucial.com. (Otherwise, none of the sticks should be recognized.)

USB Support: 2.x Compliant

I put 2 stick into the slots. , why?

did you modify the max memory in bios? It should be unchecked. also open task manager and take a snapshot of the performance tab for us to see.

Anyway, I uncheck the maximum memory from "boot" by entering msconfig, now i have 3.75Gb. I guess the rest 250M is spared to video card. Am I right?[/QUOTE]

Do you have 64 bit home? I know 64 bit pro can see up to 16 gigs of RAM before it starts sacrificing some to video memory. But anyway it looks like your problem is solved.

I had the same issues but fixed it by BIOS updating.

My system has a ASUS P5N-MX with 4G of RAM. When I upgraded my OS from windows vista 32bit home premium to windows 7 64bit professional, I saw the same message, "4G installed (3.75G usable)".

There was no menu like "memory hole remap" in the BIOS so that I tried to update it; I visited the ASUS website. After I renewed it - I didn't make any change in the BIOS menu, the message "4GB (3.75GB usable)" was automatically changed to just "4GB". Yet, there is no menu for "memory remap" in the new BIOS.

Having the same problem after i upgraded(fresh install) to ultimate windows 7 64bit build 7600 - there was no problem on the older build versions I've tested had install in the past... typically.

I don't have the bios option in my case i can see the that the memory is there in windows:

The msconfig max memory didn't do it for me neither and have tried different drivers, bios etc. etc. all with out any change.

It's a "gaming" high performance laptop all dedicated ram not shared and still "Installed memory (RAM): 4,00 GB (3,00 GB usable)."

I can live with the 3GB but would like to have the extra GB when i use video edit programs etc.

Hoping there will come a fix or something from Windows or producent.
Will try a reinstall just to if that fixes anything one of thees days.

if you are using onboard video then that is what your "missing" 256mb is being used for
