Seagate 2TB external drive not recognized

    Hello,
When attempting to back up files to my new external drive, the drive was not recognized by my computer. After reading other threads, I was able to assign a drive letter via disk management and run a backup. My question is, do I need to go thru this exercise EVERY time I plug in the external drive via the USB? Is there a way to make the drive map permanent? I had to do this again today to see the external drive with a drive letter via Start menu /Computer

When you buy a brand new drive from the shelf, there is no partition or partition letter on the drive. That you have to assign once and it will be good for the life of the drive (unless you change it later).

Thank you for your reply, but as I stated, when I plugged in the drive again I could not see it in windows until I again assigned the drive letter. Is there a way to make the drive viewable with the assigned letter each time you plug back in?

Please plug in your external drive and then complete this tutorial by Golden.
This will give us a better idea of what you have.

What letter were you using the the external drive partition?

Thank you both. I actually un-plugged and plugged in the drive again and this time it displayed as Drive E. It took a minute but it did show up. I think I'm good now. :)
