RAID10 -- 2 drives spontaneously fall out of RAID

Hello,

Until about a week ago, I had a RAID10 configuration that was working well for a few months, when, from one day to the next, two of the drives went from being "Member Disks" to "Non-RAID Disks".

Based on the screenshot the RAID status is "Failed", but the drives themselves appear to be healthy, i.e. not showing "Failed":



Note that Disk 0 is my SSD C:\ drive.

Disks 1-4 made up the RAID10, but only disks 3 & 4 are showing as still being members. Each disk is 2.7Tb.


Here's a shot from Disk Management:



Disks 1 & 2 are showing as Dynamic / Invalid.

Disks 3 & 4 are showing as a single volume "Disk 3" as Unknown / Not Initialized.

Any idea of what might have happened here? And, more importantly, can they be added back to the RAID without losing the data?

At this point I'm not sure that the 2 disks that remain as RAID member disks are the correct ones I need to rebuild. I'm actually pretty sure they're not, which is why I'm really interested in whether there's a straight-forward solution to this.

Did you get any updates from Windows that may have contained updated drivers?
If yes, do a system restore prior the update. Set windows updates to notify first and not automatic.
Not always smooth sailing in these waters but that's why we have backups. (or should)

Hi Baddog- I had already tried that, but it didn't work. After a while I actually went right back to a clean image that I created right after I put my system together and had installed all of my applications, updates, settings, etc. over the summer... but that didn't work either.

I hear you with the backups! I had been religious about doing them, but admittedly slacked off once I got the RAID 10 in place...

If you restored a clean image from when it was working but still not working I would guess some
hardware problem is afoot here either in the controllers or the drives themselves.
Wish I could offer some better advice.

I should say that once I restored to the clean image I didn't do anything in the BIOS or the RAID config utility (ctrl+I) since I was concerned about accidentally deleting data.

That said, is there anything I can do in ctrl+I (or elsewhere) to recreate the RAID10 without deleting data?

I think page 4 may be where you need to look.
Sorry but haven't dealt with raid arrays in a very long time and much technology has passed me by.
I do remember backing up a bios may not even be possible now. Take digital pic of it or write settings down when sorted.

My motherboard is the Gigabyte GA-X99-UD5. I imagine the method to create a RAID10 would be similar to the directions you posted. What I'm most wary of at the moment is doing this but erasing all if the data, which would probably happen if I did this as though it were a fresh RAID10 setup... Anyone else who might know what to do here?

Either way, thanks for your input Baddog, much appreciated. I hope there's a way to do what I need to do!
