Windows 7: witch is best intel or amd

14 Nov 2009   #11

Windows 7 Ultimate x64

I usually go with the chipset maker who is making the stronger chips at the best price. I think since the introduction of the Core 2 Duo..that Intel has been the leader hands down. For quite a while, the Athlon X2 was the CPU to beat and that is what I recommended now. Today, it's a different story...for the past 2 or 3 years AMD has been playing catchup in a major way and usually the top of the AMD line competes with the previous generation of the Intel chips. While the new Phenom II chips are making some headway...I don't think you save enough by going with AMD to justify the lost performance over a Core i5 or a Core i7.

Here is an excellent motherboard for $140. - Intel BOXDP55WG LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards
Here is a tremendously powerful processor for $199. - Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops

You will need to buy some DDR3 memory for this build.
This will cost you about $25 per gig.
Excellent recommendation- especially the i5. This is another mobo option for $99.99 - Intel BOXDP55WB LGA 1156 Intel P55 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards
