Will sudden cable connection problem affect hard drive in the long run

When the cable of an external drive is awkwardly plug in and cause the following error (not exact wording)

'An error was detected on device during paging operation' and 'unable to flush data to transaction log'.

Will there be a long term effect on the drive since the problem is only cause by not plugging the cable properly.

Hi LearningTeam, welcome to the Forum.

I doubt the hard drive will be affected but there might be a problem with the data transferred during that time. So check to see if the data is still working correctly.

In other word, if the data are transferred again there will be no problem?

What if the drive is upside down when it is in use will that cause any problem? Not sure if its upside down, both side look the same...

Upside down, sideways, it won`t hurt the drive. But what is the problem with the power connection ?

I would fix that right away before you kill the drive.

Thanks for the reply and it was in an awkward positions when plug in which cause the error. Just wondering if there will be any long term effect cause by the error.

As mentioned there should be no long term problem with the drive, but just make sure it does not happen again. The main thing to watch with external drive is not being exposed to physical shocks, such as dropping it, knocking it over or similar events.

What about when a external drive is plug in for the first time and the pc says something along the line of 'unable to install driver' yet the hard disk can be access, when plug in the second time it does not try to reinstall driver.

Does that mean it is usable or not usable?

It should only install the driver 1 time, as long as you can use it, you`re fine.
