Well i'm sure this doesn't help you Joe , but mines still burns after removing the lower filters
I wonder if I'd still have the same problems if I went to a USB DVD?

It's a good job it is'nt mission critical. I have 4 systems using my equipment at this moment and three of the can use my CD player. When I installed windows 7 it too could see and use it. What went wrong? After an update it stopped working. Come on Microsoft you can do better than this!!
I am really surprised that a large manufacturer doesn't support motherboards with BIOS updates for at least 4 or 5 years. Did you try changing the Motherboard drop-down list box on this page to a different socket?

The list displayed by default is just for socket "LGA775", but the list updates (very slowly) when you change the Motherboard value to a different socket type.
BTW, 32 bit or 64 bit home premium?
My mobo box and docs say socket 462. On the website it's called socket A. WTH! Anyway the latest socket A bios is from 6-13-2005 and my board already has that.
I'm using 32bit Windows 7 Home Premium.
This sucks. The drive reads and burns cd's just fine. It does cd's and dvd's fine in another computer. Both hard drives work fine. My USB external drive works fine. Windows 7 just seems to have decided I don't need to use dvd's anymore.

Hmmm...that throws me. I had suspected that you had jumped to 64 bit. Thus, I am lining up with the folks who suspect an OS software issue...but a four year-old MBoard BIOS is also suspect.
The firmware flash fixed me right up...but I also made sure that I reflashed my MBoard BIOS before going to 7...and it was a fairly recent BIOS (within the last year or so).
Do you have access to another IDE-based optical drive? Would be interesting to see if it worked...or was also causing issues. If that works, it's a cheap fix to keep your Windows 7 goodness. $30 (US) gets you quite a few choices:

If it doesn't work, that is also interesting.

I have an old DVD rom but not another burner. The system and burner worked fine with XP, Vista and even Ubuntu with no issues. I've updated the DVD firmware and that didn't help. It have to believe it's something to do with the new OS. I can deal with the graphics hit and the sound card not being supported but if I can't get the DVD working it's the last straw. I'll be dumping this OS and going back to XP. I'm not going spend hundreds of dollars building an all new system to support a $49.95 OS. (I got in on the pre-order deal). After using Windows 7 for the last few weeks I just don't see what all the hoopla is about anyway........
