System HDD upgrade advice required.

I have a laptop i3 (4010U) 4gb ram and 500gb hdd.

I am thinking of upgrading the internal drive with 1tb drive but there are some concerns for which i want better advice.

1. Most people say that don't upgrade internal drive to 1TB but instead buy 1TB external and use it as it is. My question is, would there be system crashes, or BIOS issues handling the 1TB drive or what else? Will it not run normal?

2. The current 500gb drive is extreme slim type, even from the normal ones available in the market. I mean it is even 2-3mm thinner. It is attached in the system board upside down. The label side is towards the system body and the drive mother board is towards outer hatch side. Will there be any problem with external drive in not being able to fit in to the board in the available space.

3. I have heard the now a days it is possible to attach a secondary drive in the place of optical drive, as optical drives are becoming obsolete. How can i do this?

I would guess since notebook hdd's are usually 5400rpm a 1tb would be painfully slower than it already is.

I have had read this some what long time ago and i found it interesting but it had skipped my mind currently while i was trying to add 1TB drive in my laptop.

I am quite thankful for your kind help. Your concern for sorting out the solution was very generous of yours. If you can help me a little bit more, i would be really so thankful to you.

1. I am not sure what type of optical drive i have in my system. What i searched i found i have a slim type of optical drive. The one you mentioned above in the link for adding drive in optical drive port, is for 12.5mm optical drives. i want to know, if i this is compatible with my laptop and can work fine, will it be able to run a 7200rpm drive while the primary drive is 5400rpm.

2. This is more of a general question asking for some information. Why laptop hard drives 5400rpm? There are 7200rpm drives available, but why its performance will be miserable? (you mentioned above).

please help me a bit more here.
