HDD doesn't show up in Windows Explorer when I connect it

    HDD doesn't show up in Windows Explorer when I connect it


    This is a 1.5 TB USB 2.0 external HDD. When I connect the drive, it does not show up in Windows Explorer. However I DO see it in Disk Management as



    Unfortunately, the only action available is Delete Volume. I would like to assign a drive letter, reformat, partition, etc.

    FYI this drive was formatted as ext4 on a linux computer. Now I want to bring it over to Windows, wipe it clean, and use it for something else.

    Any suggestions?

    If the drive has been on a Linux PC, I'd probably wipe the disk completely to get any Linux code off of it.

    I'm not sure if "delete volume" would do that. I'd likely use Diskpart's "clean" command in Windows or a third party application to wipe it. Then make a new partition and format. If that fails, try a "clean all".

    Thanks for your suggestion, but I found something that worked. I took the drive back to Linux, reformatted it as FAT32, and then brought it back to Windows. Windows assigns a drive letter, and I see the drive in both Windows Explorer and in Disk Management. Now on to the next set of problems....
