Adding External Hard Drive (WD) messed up computer

I just purchased a WD My Passport external hard drive. I already have 2 of them that work fine with my system. When I first plugged the new one in windows recognized it and tried to install. First 2 of the first 3 parameters went fine but I got an error message on the 3rd that read "WD SES Device USB Device - No Driver Found" but windows did recognize the drive. The SES (SCSI Enclosure Services) driver is a driver for some of the new optional features that I don't need.

But since that exact instant I now have several problems.

#1 - my keyboard now will not work through the normal keyboard port. Tried two different ones, no go. Luckily I had a usb keyboard that will work.

#2 - when I try to do windows update it hangs up after selecting install updates. It hangs at "downloading updates - 0kb total 0% complete".
Windows defender also hangs during update search.

There are a couple of other issues like a browser crashing, and such.
Device Manager is now giving me a yellow error icon for all 3 WD drives now as well. But they all work/are recognized.

Can someone please help?

Tell us what happens when the the computer is powered down, the 3rd WD taken offline, in fact, all 3 WDs taken offline; then a powerup/boot/startup in Safe Mode; if desktop comes to "parade rest," restart into regular boot/startup. If desktop successfully comes to "parade rest," add only one of the two formerly working WDs & restart. If all is well, then add the 2nd formerly working WD, restart. If all is well, I recommend returning the 3rd WD and getting a replacement.

@ cedar. Are all these external HDD attached attached at the same time & are powered by the USB, if so it's possible the USB is getting overloaded with the amount of power being drawn. There is a limit to how much power you can draw from the the USB ports.

If this is the problem you could run one or more of them in HDD caddies, as a caddy supplies the power for the drive.

I mean let Windows complete the engaging of services, completing its startups, getting all background and foreground in-house and 3rd party programs going. When the desktop no longer looks busy, when the desktop seems to "quietly be waiting for your input" via mouse and keyboard -- desktop's at "parade rest."

A previous poster mentioned possibly overloading usb ports, perhaps consider buying a ac-powered usb hub and plugging your WDs into that hub. Your ac-powered hub can be plugged into your ups or surge protector -- so that it comes on when your computers comes on.

Thanks Ranger4 and Roland for replying.

After an hour or more my windows update finally downloaded, although when I rebooted to implement updates I got an "unexpected crash" error afterwards. But everything seems to have installed at it shows no more updates available now upon new search.
And after several restarts my keyboard seems to now be working (from the normal jack).

When I rebooted in safe mode with the drives disconnected everything seemed to be working fine.
After booting in normal mode and reconnecting all the drives device manager then gave me the yellow driver sign on all 3 drives, when the 1st two never gave me that before. But I also asked at the WD site (and was told) and got a link and installed the new SES driver manually. So now all 3 drives show no problems in device manager.

I'm hoping that everything might be back to normal now, but I'm not sure. Only time (and the next windows update) will tell I guess. I just can't understand how a driver issue could mess up my keyboard port, windows update, browser and things. But I'm sure no expert.
Would a system restore bypass all those problems I wonder.

I still vote for an ac-powered usb hub for your WDs :)
"...Would a system restore bypass all those problems I wonder." Better yet, make weekly or bi-monthly backups of your OS partition, those restores are very often much more reliable than System Restore Points.
