How to control all USB case power (power surge warnings) USB 2.0

I know how to enable/disable UBS ports, but I want to know if I Can set specific power limits for my USB 2.0 ports? using Windows 7 pro.

How can I test my motherboard to see if maybe that might be the problem?

Everything was working fine. Then, I started using a new USB device called Track IR5.

I don't know if it's a coincidence or the culprit, but I now get a "power surge" warning for all my USB 2.0 ports when the device is unplugged. USB 3.0 is not connected/active.

My headphones disconnect most of the time. My keyboard started disconnecting more frequently and my mouse is usually the last to disconnect.

If I plug Track IR in....
as well as my other peripherals (keyboard, mouse, 2 headphones, steering wheel), everything works fine.

    If I unplug Track IR....
I'll start getting power surge warnings and my headphones, keyboard, lastly my mouse will disconnect (in that order) randomly.

It's also caused a cyclic "left click" issue with my mouse - I believe.
Over a span of 4-6 seconds, the left click button will go from standard to ultra sensitive to standard click speed again.
I can double click on a file and open it, and afew seconds later, it seems it only takes 1 click to unintentionally open that folder and then whatever file or folder my mouse cursor happened to be on, inside that folder. I slowed down and sped up the mouse click function in windows devices, but the issue still persists.

I have checked the wiring. Nothing exposed or touching.
I have turned off USB charging capability
I have tried each port individually (front and back USB 2.0 ports) to see if I have any dead ports (none)
I have tried them in combinations to see if there is some kind of short between 2 ports.

    What do I do now?

Hi 7of9, welcome to the Forum.

Have a look at this MS website & see if any suggestions there work for you.

What happens if you leave the IR5 connected & shut down the computer, disconnect the IR5, restart the computer. Does your mouse etc. then work properly. If so it might be worth looking at getting a separately powered USB hub & using that for the IR5.

Thank for the welcome.... and for your quick response.

    1) I'll try unplugging the IR5 after I shut down the computer later. For now, everything seems to be working and I don't want to jinx that. I had to switch from my new Logitech headphones (with the fancy lights), to my old G35. Which is funny in itself, because windows wouldnt recognize my G35 and its what drove me to buy the new headphones.

    2) I did try method 2 in your link (uninstall USB drivers)
But I wasn't able to uninstall all of them since, one of the drivers controlled my keyboard and mouse.

ASMedia XHCI controller (windows did not re-install this driver or a facsimile).
Generic USB Hub (uninstalled and windows installed automatically)

    Wasn't able to uninstall
Intel 7 series chipset USB enhanced host controller (2 of them)
Intel USB 3.0 Extensible host controller
    Intel USB 3.0 Root hub
USB composite device (3 of them)
    USB mass storage device
    4 USB Root Hub

I had my BIOS updated at a computer shop.
Since then, my SSD drive shows up as "SCSI" USB device, with a "safely remove hardware" icon on my task bar.
My C: harddrive icon under "Devices and Printers" looks like an external drive.
I checked my BIOS and all my drives are set so they are NOT hot swappable. And they are plugged into the BLUE connectors on the motherboard. So I'm confused.

I don't want to uninstall the USB drivers and not be able to boot my computer..... But if you say, windows will re-install the drivers, I'll give it a shot.

I can certainly agree with you that uninstalling some USB drivers might leave you without a keyboard &/or mouse, which would be hopeless, so I would not try uninstalling those.

I don't have an Asus motherboard so I can't help you on HDD connection points. Do you have the handbook on it & if so it should show which connections to use for your HDDs.

The other alternative is to take it back to the computer shop & tell them you aren't happy with it & question them on the HDD connections & any other things you wish to know.

but I want to know if I Can set specific power limits for my USB 2.0 ports? using Windows 7 pro.
This is not a OS function so I don't see how you can do it with W7. This is a hardware function so you would need to check the BIOS Setup Menu or driver settings.

I think Ranger's idea of using a USB hub that has its own power source should be seriously considered. And also avoid using multiple USB devices in the same USB pair of ports (except keyboard and mouse), if possible.

A big thank you to everyone.
After I stopped using Track IR, and several reboots later, I no longer get the error. I thought it was a "power overload" situation, but turns out, it's "not enough power".

I don't know what the purpose of having 8 USB ports if I can't use them? I usually have these devices connected....should I buy an externally powered USB hub?

cheap scissor switch Keyboard (not a gaming keyboard with displays)
    Logitech G35 headphones (from 2011)
Thrustmaster T300RS steering wheel servo (for racing games)
    all are USB 2.0

A multi-card reader connected to my USB 3.0

    That's it.

I would like to connect my G633 headphones and my Track IR, but windows stopped recognizing the G633 headphones when the problem started.

I took the plunge and updated to win10. Still, should I buy a separate UBS hub?

Thanks again guys. Regardless of the outcome, I really, really appreciate that you take the time to try and help.

You might just try swapping devices around to different USB connectors to spread the loads to different pairs of USB ports. Otherwise, a self-powered hub would probably work.
