The 32 GB is NOT SSD It is eMMC 32 GB eMMC is somewhat like flash drive. It is NOT SSD. While my sister is here looking for the laptop, i saw most compact Laptops have this eMMC 32GB Upon reading post 72, i had to scroll to the end, if anyone mentioned about this 32 GB This, i am very sure as most laptops i see in the computer mall. Laptop with 32 GB eMMC is cheap. (Note: i have to go thru from post 72 to the end to check if anyone mentioned about this) |

Hi paulyjames
As ignatzatsonic is providing you relevant info and advice, as you should be grateful. Quote:
Also why does clean install remove all these things dell come with. That doesnt make sense really. Why doesn't it make sense? A clean install means removing all partitions. Which means removing everything Dell put on there. Everything Dell included was on some partition. All you get with a clean install is Windows itself. Period. You better have your warranty straight with Dell. Maybe if you swap hard drives, the warranty is changed or voided entirely. I don't know. If there is a label sticker say "Do not remove, else warranty void" on some screws or other location. Don't touch & open it, as if 1 sticker is break, the whole warranty will be null & void. They will honor the warranty, as i did encountered for laptop HDD as replacement 1 to 1. The only problem is the data all gone, as it is using factory restore. So do backup regularly as other have mentioned. |

Hard Drive
1TB 5400RPM Hard Drive + 32GB Solid State Drive Whether it is actually an eMMC or not, I don't know. In any case, whatever it is, it's too small for an OS. |

Hey guys went to the repair shop and mentioned what sonic said. Heres the interesting thing. When i went there and told him about the hard drive issue where you can't really download much into the computer, he said all i needed to do was change all my chrome downloads to the other drive... The Volume Drive the 230gb free of 232gb one. Then said just do that with other programs and thats good enough. I asked well what if i want to do with youtube downloader etc... then he said he was able to do this by changing the folder that all videos sent to by changing the C drive to the ssd drive etc. I said so i dont need to install windows 10 on the 250gb ssd. He said no i dont. But then i said but i was told online that i have to have clean install or imaging/clone because isn't it true when windows 10 updates, then i dont have enough space in my 32gb ssd? Thus i have less than 1gb left. So any updates it does, surely it will take 1gb later on in the future, wouldn't that be a problem? He said yes and said then updates probably wouldn't happen. So because of that, i said well wouldn't you recommend copying windows 10 into the 250gb ssd due to this and he said yes.
He recommended clean install as oppose to cloning/imaging. I mentioned that i want the 250gb as my C drive and of course have windows 10 there and he said that is easy to do. I asked him about the 32gb and asked what he suggested to do with it. Such as wipe it clean, leave it there or take it out. He recommended to wipe it out. As of now C drive has the samsung 250gb ssd as 201gb free out of 232gb. The 32gb shows 29.7gb free of 29.8gb. I asked would he need to swap the hard drive locations physically and he said no. When i got back the laptop, i noticed that windows 10 the desktop looks a lot different. I went and pressed the start power and noticed the power button which i click on then press shut down wasn't there. He showed it to me where its on the bottom left corner the 3rd last button etc. He told me he installed windows 10 but i believe he said the 6th edition? He said it was the newest windows 10 edition. Does anyone know which version i had earlier? What got me is confused here is how did he install the 6th edition or the newest one when mine was not that one? Or i always had the option to upgrade to the windows 10 6th edition? He also installed 10gb of programs like ccleaner, smart defrag, avg, skype, malwarebytes and even microsoft office 2016 as well. Thoughts on this? I do feel good that my hard drive with windows 10 is on the right hard drive now. But confused why he installed the newest windows 10 on my laptop. I guess most repair shops want to install the latest version as its better? Also not sure why office 2016 is there as well as i think this is a real version and not 30 day free trial. |

Or i always had the option to upgrade to the windows 10 6th edition? Some repair shops do have their own source, as similar to OEM, for most Windows OS. My repairman did mentioned that he had install the Windows 7 Pro and Windows 7 HP which he did not used the OEM version on the Laptops. As for where the shop get the Windows 7, 8 & 10 he had mentioned as it is under Corporate Licence. Waiting for him to pass me the USB flash drive with Windows OS, that is 7, 8 & 10 (all versions, eg, Pro, HP) One of the 2 laptops he did for me, has this "Not Genuine", possible due to my hardware changes. So, your laptop Windows should not be a problem if the repairman did the installation for you. So do check on the activated or not, which i don't think there is an issue in your case. Now that you have the laptop with you, suggest you to do both Image Backup and set the System Restore Config first. Then you can play around to check how good is the laptop. (Note: As in my post 161, please ignore it, as it is my mistake ![]() |

I think the "sixth edition" may be what is also known as the Anniversary edition? It doesn't matter. He presumably downloaded the latest version, whatever it is, and installed that. You previously had the version available to Dell at the time the refurber installed to the 32 GB. Doesn't matter what it was. Yes, you always had the option to upgrade to this 6th edition. Anybody can download the newest version--even if they have no license. The download is given away. The license is not. Get used to it---you will be upgraded into the future--whether you want to or not. That's one of the er, ah, uh, "advantages" of Windows 10. I know this is true because Microsoft says it's true. He also installed 10gb of programs like ccleaner, smart defrag, avg, skype, malwarebytes and even microsoft office 2016 as well. That's all OK, but I'm not sure you need smart defrag and I'd assume he just got you a trial version of Office. It will probably expire in a few weeks. If you don't want it, uninstall it. You got the free version of Malwarebytes. Run it say once a week. You might consider buying the paid version. The free version removes bad stuff, but does NOT prevent it from getting on your machine. The paid version prevents. Thoughts on this? But confused why he installed the newest windows 10 on my laptop. I guess most repair shops want to install the latest version as its better? Also not sure why office 2016 is there as well as i think this is a real version and not 30 day free trial. I seriously doubt it's a "real" version of Office unless you know you paid for it from Dell or unless he is doing something shady. Yeah, show us a picture of Disk Management. The "newest" version of Win 10 is OK. |

![]() Is there a way to find out if the office 2016 is a 30 day trial or legit? It sort of looks like a real copy and not 30 day trial date. He did mention he installed office 2016. |

One other question. I should have no problem connecting this laptop to an external monitor with an hdmi port right?
With my sager np2740 laptop, i connected it to a 24 inch asus monitor Amazon.com: asus 1920x1200: Electronics Can someone tell me if my hdmi cable that i use with my sager np2740 that connects to my asus monitor will work with connecting this dell xps to the same monitor? I do not have the hdmi cable with me nor do i have that monitor at the moment. So i have to make sure i have the wire to connect this to my monitor. The reason i ask this is because at first i wanted to get an asus zenbook laptop and i read you need a mini hdmi cable to hdmi if i wanted to connect it to external monitor. Does this one need it or not? I'm looking at the sides of the xps 15 and not very sure. Thanks guys. |

I don't know about Office. If you did not pay for it in your original purchase, I don't see how it can be a legal full version.
The pic looks pretty good. I'm not sure why you show something called a "recovery" partition on the 250 GB drive. That's what I'd expect to see on a machine from Dell, but if he did a clean install I wouldn't expect to see a recovery partition. I'm not sure what that thing is because I don't use Windows 10. Someone else might know. Did he tell you point blank that he did a clean install rather than some type of clone or image? I guess you can use that 32 GB thingy for ordinary storage if you run out of space on C. I don't know anything about your HDMI or monitor situation. Normally, you'd want C to be assigned as Disk 0, not Disk 1, but that may be impossible considering that 32 GB gizmo and it's not a big deal. You may be able to assign the letter D to that gizmo rather than the current E. Doesn't really matter. |
