Hard drive preventing clean shutdown/sleep/restart stop 0x9F

I recently purchased a new (used) Asus laptop K53SV because I needed better graphics and wanted to downgrade to Windows 7. When I purchased the laptop I gave the store a brand new 256GB SSD and they duly transferred the contents of the original WD 640GB drive to the SSD. The laptop has worked perfectly ever since.

However, I was stuck with a 640GB drive. So just the other day I decided to replace the CDROM drive with the WD 640GB. Who uses CDROM drives anymore? I have an external one if I really need it. I bought the correct HD carrier and installed the drive. But now I cannot cleanly shutdown/sleep/restart etc. If I shutdown the screen goes black after awhile but the power button light stays on. After a few more minutes the system blues screens with this error:

    Driver power state failure
    Stop 0x9F

So I did a diagnostic startup to eliminate the possibility of any other driver causing the problem because I had also upgraded the internal wireless at the same time. Still same problem. So I removed the WD 640GB and now the system shutdowns/restarts/sleeps normally.

BTW when the WD 640GB is in the system I am able to use it without any apparent problems.

WD support is having problems right now otherwise I would have downloaded their diag utility before posting. I will do that but in the mean time any suggestions? Is there anything inherently wrong with what I did? Did I miss something? Thanks.

Hi dpetican, welcome to the Forum.

Have you accessed the BIOS & checked that the CD/DVD drive is not still showing in the boot order. If so you will have to remove it from the start up list.

Then go to Control Panel then Device Manager & see if the CD/DVD is still showing & if so uninstall it.

Could you then post back with a screen shot of your Disc Management with the 640GB drive attached to your computer. The tutorial below will show you how to do that & there is a link at the end of it explaining how to upload that to the Forum.

Screenshot of disk management attached. Nothing related to CDROM left in the BIOS. Interestingly the 2nd HD doesn't even show up as a boot option. However, I did discover this in the event viewer:

I am certainly not an expert on BIOS settings, so it might be best to wait for someone to come in & offer advice on removing this item showing in your event viewer.
    "Description:
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
    cdrom".

Also your OS disc C has a 11.91GB primary partition that appears to be empty. This may have been the result of the "store" cloning the original 640GB disc to the new SSD. Care needs to be exercised when removing partitions on discs, so again it would be best to wait for more help here.

I have asked for more help so be patient & wait for help.

While you may do what axe0 and DavidE suggested, you may also have a look at this: Driver power state failure-- Stop 0x9F - Microsoft Community In that I may suggest that you try Method 2 "Update the drivers for the video card, sound card and the chipset from the manufacturer’s website."

    • I've tested the hard drive and it passed. SMART attributes look okay.
    • I also tried another hard drive and it caused the same problem. Remember the problem goes away when the second hard drive is not present.
    • The presence or absence of the CDROM does not seem to affect the behavior.
    • All drivers were up-to-date before installing the new hardware. I downloaded and installed the latest Intel Chipset Device Software anyway.
    • The 11.91GB partition on the C drive is a special Asus recovery partition.
    • I restored to the BIOS defaults. The second hard drive now shows up in the BIOS, but I may have overlooked it the first time.
    • I attempted to flash the BIOS as I noticed there have been some updates. However the Asus winflash utility will not run on my system. Says I do not have an Asus system. Oy! The BIOS easy flash did not recognize the file I downloaded as compatible with my system. I'm sure I downloaded the correct files. I will have to ask on Asus forums.
    • BSOD info attached.
    • I noticed in the BIOS that I have 3 SATA channels but only 2 connectors. Currently the boot drive is on channel 0, while the second hard drive is on channel 1.

    Thanks.

    That is VERY strange.
I would focus on updating the BIOS.
You said that it is a used laptop. Is it possible that the motherboard was replaced by a different one?
Look on BIOS for the MB information and compare to the model you have.

    Possible causes:
    - BIOS
    - driver of the controller
    - controller itself

    Code:
    Event[3962]:

A processor is waiting for a process to work on an IRP, but for some reason the process exceeded a DPC request so it couldn't get to the IRP in time. Due to the limit of the minidump I can't get more out of it.
