Another Reformating a HD question - these are "read only" ! ?

They're smaller HD came out of my old H Desktop that died 2-3 years go. FINALLY Sabrent connector recognized Files and Folders on the 2, which let me recover data. However, these 2 Maxtor's show up as Read Only - and I've tried changing permissions with no luck. Other than now just being a challenge to reformat the dang things - Any hints how to get around the read only designation? An older thread suggested going DOS route - may try that.. Input appreciated.

What I - Used -- control panel, administrative tools, Disk Management - where the drive, ( Hmm-- only that data area actually !!) via Sabrent, showed up as read only.

    - NOTE - Some time ago, these drives ( via sabrent again ) would be shown in 'full', with "non-accessible" partitions, MBR partitions, etc - but with no access to the data. Today, only a small data section was available (so I grabbed old stale data.)
-- Note-note - I was really getting P.O'd with Sabrent not being able to access the data when the HD showed up that first time around.
-- NOte-NOte- Note- This time It was on the older Lenovo, centrino, with W7 ultimate... for what that's worth.
