ext.HDD not recognised by safely remove but is listed on WinExp

My data files for my new Lenovo (Win-7 PRO x64) are stored on an exterior HDD.
- "Safely Remove" does not see the data drive, but Win-Explorer does.
I have only installed ... Free Macrium, Bitdefender Internet Security 2017, and 7zip on the Lenovo
- I started commissioning the Lenovo 6 days ago.

Any ideas as to why the external HDD is not "seen" by safely remove ?

When Safely Remove does respond, the HDD cannot be released by the OS.
- WinExplorer is always the problem !
- I have to "eject" the external HDD in WinExplorer to release the HDD.
The HDD is about 3 years old, and used for about 6 hours each day, to store data.

I would appreciate any guidance, thank you :)

I purchased the Lenovo in late Aug-2015, and one week later I had a stroke (in a coma for 4 days).
As a result the Lenovo has remained in its box until now when I felt confident enough to commission the Lenovo with my preferences
