Windows 7: USB Hard Disk needs to be formatted to use USB 3.0

USB Hard Disk needs to be formatted to use USB 3.0

I use my external hard drive to record gameplay through NVIDIA Share using a USB 2.0 port, but lately I've been seeing dropped frames and other ugly things in the outputted files, when the dropped frames have been minimal in the past. My first thought was to switch it to one of my USB 3.0 ports in the back, as the drive can utilize the power of 3.0. However, plugging it into a 3.0 port has always yielded a message similar to the following:

"This device needs to be formatted before you can use it with Windows. Format now?"

Of course, that's total crap, since I just had it plugged into the same machine a second ago, and I can't just erase the contents. I would lose more than just those gameplay clips and have no other location big enough to store it all temporarily. I would prefer to not buy another internal disk and transfer everything. My question is,

-Is this typical behavior of a 3.0 drive that's been used in a 2.0 port? Is there an explanation?

Thanks in advance.
