DVD-RW unit won't read games DVD

Hello everyone

I recently had problems with DVD unit reading CD's and DVD's

While looking for help on the internet I tried few procedures recommended
for example I cleaned the lens, tried uninstalling the device and let system
install it itself, tried even that "regedit" suggestion to look for Lower and UpperFilters...

The status now is, there's no problem with reading data CD's and DVD's, copying data from them,
also I am able to play movie DVD without any problems. Only thing that doesn't work is
when I try to install game from DVD.
When I try that, DVD starts rolling but the device starts to make different noise, regular "clicking"
in the beginning and after some time kind of regular scrooping.
It sounds like the dvd doesn't even reach full rolling speed. The DVD's I tried are not scratched
or anything, I tried even brand new game DVD I recently bought and it's still the same.

I have win7 home premium 64bit on HP Pavilion dv6 laptop.
In device manager the name of the unit is "hp CDDVDW TS-L633N ATA Device".

Based on the fact that it reads everything except for games I'd guess device works fine,
so maybe settings problem or something like that?

Thanks for any suggestions

It still has to be a hardware problem in the drive. The Laser is probably the problem. Internally in the drive it increases or decreases the intensity of the laser based on a "calibration" track on each disc. I would suspect the laser does not have enough intensity for those discs. If this is the case, the only option is to replace the drive or use a USB connected external drive.

Thank you for your reply.

Is the intensity of laser something that can go wrong over time?
I surely don't remember having this "selective" problems earlier.

On the other hand, my laptop is almost 7 years old and no components were replaced over this period.

Yesterday I tried to install older game from CD and that worked fine. Does this fit your answer?

I will try external unit and see what happens (I will get to it probably on weekend so I will reply later).

The laser can lose intensity. I've worked problems over the years where that was the problem or what we considered the problem.
A CD does not require the intensity that some DVD's require, thus most likely why the CD can be read.
