I geekly installed win7 when another (only DATA) HDD was connected to MBD.
It happened to be mistake because win7 somehow writes codes in mbr of both HDD so when i disconnect second one, op sys decline to start.
How to solve problem of having only one HDD (4 partitions per HDD) working WIN7 system.
What it's done is set the second drive as boot drive and put some files on there remove second drive then boot install DVD and try repair
I have problem with second drive to be installable, i fixed first boot loader easily but i have unbootable second HDD...
I instaled win10 on it, but only files were copied and it is not bootable..
Partition is active, but not system not boot....
I installed win10 from DVD....
How to make partition system....format/s is not working anymore
Or to make it system and bootable...?
I still think win7 wrote something in mbr of second hdd....
First can you select the boot device in the bios to confirm it will boot from second hd? which did you install first you have to install the oldiest o/s first as it wont understand new boot setup. Can you post a screenshot from disk manager so we can see
I am trying whole time not to make dual boot. Just 1HDD with win7 and 1HDD with win10.
I tried in the past to separate 2HDD(2years ago then 1st hdd with win7, 2nd hdd with win7) but second HDD was unbootable so i quit.
i waited win7 and now win10 as op sys to become old...
I found 2 articles about my mistake in the past, when user install win7 with 2HDD connected, and problems with second HDD after that , but i hoped that after time some system solution will be introduced...
So, my approach is allways one HDD is connected to mbd.
On bios i cannot precise which SATA line will be boot first but only one HDD is connected at the time so maybe irrelevant in this.
I can include/exclude DVD as first option for boot loading, and it is DVD, but in past with other mbd it was not a problem, if DVD is not wanted, do not pres space or key and after 10s comp goes to HDD booting...
With this mbd too, with other discs.
I use terms first HDD and second HDD only as i would use hitachi hdd and sagate hdd so i can swap to use terms in that way.
Only one HDD is connected at the time.Not on the same sata line i just disconnect data cable from HDD.
But then seagate HDD (as new term for second HDD unit) is only data, not bootable, not system partition (4 partition disc, mbr,1st primary , active, 2st, logical +3x ntfs partition)
Even DVD install disc of win10 can not make him bootable or to work win10.
And somehow installing win7 when it was connected as second HDD maybe did that.
Maybe it is scrambled, secured, protected, i dont know.
I did not turn in any protection or scrambling...
You have to fix one OS disk at a time.
Attach the HDD with Win 7 and leave the other disconnected.
If it doesn't boot, do a start up repair with Win 7 installation disk.
Once Win 7 is booting, detach the HDD with Win 7 and attach the HDD with Win 10.
If it doesn't boot, do a start up repair with Win 10 installation disk.
When both HDD are boot able, attach both to the MB and choose with one to boot from boot menu (F12?)
I am getting to the end of story...
Second HDD connection with WIN7 i had to finish by erase and repartition of HDD.
That made it independent again.
WIN7 HDD was very insensitive about that, repair boot loader at once.....
So win7 was alone and stand by bootable...
I installed or tried to install win10 on second HDD (first HDD disconnected = sata data cable out)
First attempt win10 rejected HDD is not MBR (parameters involved were EFI, GPT, DVD first boot,AHCI)
Second attempt win10 acknowledged (parameters involved were non EFI, mbr, HDD first, AHCI)
But for some reason that was really fake.
Not bootable HDD partition, even not system , not active.
After fdisk linux assist HDD partition is made bootable, active...
But no happy end.
Then in some test for overclocking i read that similiar motherboard has fluke that win 10 is not possible in ahci way of work.
Second installation of win10, (parameters non EFI, mbr, DVD first, IDE) did the job.
But system is 50% slower in IDE than in AHCI.
Then i started procedure for moving WIN10 to AHCI, EFI, mbr (even in some articles is recommended to pair efi and gpt , non efi and mbr)
I am new in win10 so i find regedit by search option not by command promptlonewolf7 Sep 12, 2015, 3:50 PM Yes there is a way on WIN 10 also ! Go into BIOS set the SATA mode to IDE and boot into system.
Start REGEDIT and look for this line :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\storahci\StartOverride
Change the 0 DWORD value from 3 to 0.
Reboot, and change your SATA controller to AHCI in BIOS. Now let it boot into safe mode, WIN 10 will install required drivers for AHCI.
Now with a normal boot you will boot into Windows with AHCI drivers.
Note : OEMs suggest reinstalling rather than changing, especially with an SSD.
You stand the chance of loosing your install if something goes wrong, and different systems may behave differently.
Not Recommended for Windows 7.
This worked and win10 was alive , bootable on second HDD, parameters EFI, AHCI, with no dual boot or boot manager.

Microsoft became very mainstream lined so WIN10 is very rejectable and unsupportive to older graphics, chip-sets, even for hardware for win7 era.Almost everywhere gymnastic about drivers is inevitable
And that is pretty fast hardware.
